re wongdhen house, i made a reservation with them via e-mail three weeks before i was to arrive india. several correspondences passed between us, and i confirmed the day before leaving. however, when i arrived to the wongdhen, at 3 a.m., the night manager told me that they gave my room to someone. you can imagine how upsetting that was, but they had one room, with a common bath, open, so at least i had something.
i have stayed at this hotel for years now, so was disappointed with this. when i spoke with the man who does all the e-mail reservations he told me that he never made any promises, which is not true, at all. they are so busy, as are all hotels in the colony right now, that it is near impossible to find a room here. i am not sure, nor are the tibetans that i've spoken with, how imminent demolition is, but regardless, you may or may not be able to get a room at wongdhen, even with reservations.

Sorry to hear of your hotel experience. I am having a similar experience with my Delhi Bangalore flight I reserved with a travel agent (Indian here in the uSA of course)and Air Shahara. I am getting nervous whether I have one or not.
Also lotus blossom and opthers: I will be in Delhi and wondering what I SHOULD SEE in the area. I went there as a kid many moons ago.

I know one in the south (Mysore area). They are so clean as a colony. I bought rugs for my children that have lasted to this day. Watched monks in training (which was 90 % of the colony; can't men do anything else I wondered)with their chants. Was a very neat experience.
But this is the south... |

demolition derby in Delhi
The entire Majnu ka Tila settlement is NOT scheduled for demolition, just "unauthorized" structures. Anybody who's been in Delhi recently has noticed the shocking amount of demolition going on. In some cases, entire areas have been flattened to rubble, and in others the government just hacks away at multistoried buildings to ensure that the are in a state of ruins and uninhabitable. All very unsafe and adding greatly to general choking winter haze.
