Any info. on these Delhi hotels

We are planning to travel to India in the summer and will be spending 3 nights / 2 days in Delhi en route to Hyderabad. We'll spend one day to go to Agra and the other to look around Delhi. Want a mid range hotel ($50-$100 per night inclusive of taxes etc.) in close proximity to New Delhi Railway Station with good amenities and a place that we can feel safe leaving our luggage etc. when we are out and about

My search has turned up the following and would like your experiences (if any) at any of these places.

Thanks in advance.

kprasad

1) Florence Inn
2) Hotel Madonna
3) Hotel Good Palace
4) Gold Regency
5) Hotel Swati
6) Clark Intl.
7) Nirula's

Try www.hotelsouthern.com. We enjoyed staying there, amd it is quiet affordable. It's not near the station, but a metrostation is. They also have a good travelservice.

All of these r good hotels n are of same budget almost but u can only stay in one,so u have to decide which one suites u according to ur trip.
U have to travel in train so all of them r near railway station around 4 to 5 km.

Try Hotel Broadway. It's only a short autorickshaw ride from the station, is clean, comfortable, the food is great and it's very safe.

I stayed at Florence Inn over last weekend. It is rather new and very well set up with good service. It is at Karol Bagh but near the Metro station there. The Metro will not accept full size backpacks, suitcases etc for security reasons but is otherwise great for getting about.

Florence Inn is fully booked in winter months but may be better in summer.

I have stayed at both Nirula's and the Good Palace within the last few months. The Good Palace was very reasonably priced (under $40 as I recall) and I was surprised by how nice the room was. However the hotel is off on a side street in a neighborhood without many restaurant options. But its very near the subway. Nirula's was closer to $90, has great restaurants in the hotel and nearby and also close to the subway. I didn't store any luggage at the Good Palace but did at Nirula's without any problems. My room there was excellent and a porter brings you cookies in the evening. A nice touch.

just checked out of Gold Regency in Paharganj about 1/2 hour ago.

it's not the worst place in PG, nor should it be for 1480 rupees. but there is the usual throng of helpers waiting in the hallways to ambush you every time you stray from your room with offers of help you don't need, for a tip.

one of them entered our room and actually stole the TV remote control while we were out. 2 requests to have it returned were not acted upon (despite the standard assurances of "no problem sir").

presumably 50 rupees would have located it, but we refused to play that game.

I'd avoid the Gold Regency. Its one advantage is its nearness to the main railway station. But . . . rooms are gloomy, bathrooms are ghastly, the restaurant is poor, and -- despite its claims -- its sole computer outlet is in the lobby (or was when I was there a year and a half ago). Worst of all, on weekends there is an incredibly loud disco -- or something -- that sends noise at least as high as fourth floor rooms.

I stayed at the Hotel Swati and Hotel Swati Deluxe for one night each. The Deluxe is nicer, but the staff at both places seemed so surly. I would stay there again if I wasn't paying for it, but I'm more of a budget traveler who doesn't mind shared bathrooms, etc. The only reason I stayed at at Swati is because I was traveling with a large group and we got some sort of discount.

Try Hotel Legend or Hotel Ajanta on Arakashan Road (runs parallel to Paharganj) - much quieter, and these hotels are nice and within walking distance from the station (that's if New Delhi station is the one by Paharganj???). Hotel Legend was around 800R for a double room. Ajanta similar. There are lots of hotels on this street.

Let me tell you that the same problem of being ambushed for tips all over the place exists in the top-tier hotels as well. Just stayed (on an expense account) at the Qutab Hotel at $180 or something per night - same old thing.
