Hi guys,
I wanted to post in the chai and chat forum but it's locked, so my appologies if this new thread does not suit the delhi forum. I am a big fan of small antique paintings, calligraphy, jewellery, copper ware, islamic objects and tribal adornments, and during my last trip to india (rajasthan and delhi) i picked some really great stuff during my stay in pushkar. it seems that this little city has it share of antique dealers, selling everything from hindu memorabilia to tribal jewellery. When i went to delhi, i relentlessly toured the whole city only to find a couple of similar shops in LAL QILA but of a high end (pricey) category. As i am heading again to india i wanted to know where should i go (in delhi as well as in other parts of the country : rajasthan, gugerat, bombay, ahmedabad, hyderabad...?) to find those little wonderful shops where you can find such items.... Again my main interest are tribal silver jewellerey and small islamic, mughal (islam oriented) items (jewellery, calligraphy or copper wares), that are affordable (not like those high end shops in jaipur!!!!arghhh!!). I really want to know about flea-market-like places where you speak to the owner, you get offered chai and you are likely to be authorized to search the trunks and be free to move around and not like those antique posh dealer where the single silver ring cost a 1000US$ If you have any info on where to find such places around india, it would be much apreciated. Regarding the islamic-mughal-related old objects , am i more likely to find them in formerly ruled mughal cities where there is still a sizable muslim community living??? what are those cities? Thank you for your help And sorry for my hectic english.... i am french ![]() |

Sundar Nagar market in Delhi near the Oberoi has several antique type shops. No idea of prices but there's both posh looking places and those piled high with all sorts of things. Bear in mind that it's illegal to export anything more than 100 years old.
