Question American Embassy School

We will be sending our children to school while in New Delhi and I have heard from "future co-workers" the school is excellent. We have completely explored their website and the school does seem pretty good--does anyone have any first-hand information on this day school?

I know the school is near the embassies, but what kind of area is it--ie, safe, traffic shopping? Please and thank you!

the school is located pretty much in the heart of the diplomatic enclave - which probably has some of the widest, cleanest, well kept streets in all of Delhi. Security wise its also well catered for as their are armed police/ reservists permanently located on corners throughout the suburb (there's one located on the corner opposite one of the school entrances next to the US compound).

the school itself occupies an entire block and has two main entrances. Traffic wise - its the same as any other place in Delhi (maybe not as much traffic but you still have to keep a look out for everything coming at you from several different directions). Shopping wise - there isn't any. The suburb of chanakyapuri (which is were the school and embassy are) has no malls, large shopping complexes. The closest shops are a few small shops and stalls in nearby Mulcha Marg, or Yaswant Place.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask. We live one block away from the school.

Thank you so much! That does help some! Do you know the quality of the school? I see it offers much, but I only have spoken to one person as to the quality of the education and the school of course...

Glad to hear it sound very safe for our children. I believe we too will live in that vicinity as well. So much to do in so little time when preparing for a move like this one. Thank you again for your assistance.

your more than welcome - that's what the forum is here for

Re the quality - that would really depend on what your children are getting now compared to what you will find at AES. Its very popular with families on the US Embassy compound - and certainly all the parents there rave about how good the school is. It is certainly the best resourced school in the Delhi (possibly most of India for that matter)given the funding it receives and the fees parents pay. At the same time it is lacking for space as it has taken a huge number of students for the size of the site it is (no doubt you will have heard about the long waiting lists and the fact these are closed - so even getting onto the waiting list is a mission let alone getting into the school).

There are no sports fields at the school, and one of the last remaining open pieces of ground has been swallowed up in the last year for a new building for the senior school I think. As a result the sports activities are limited to indoor sports, whle limited outdoor sports happens only at certain times of the year requiring travel off site.

Having said that - for a US style education there is no other choice in Delhi. The closest other international school is the British International school - which teaches a UK curriculum and IB. Not as well resourced as the American school - but it does have football grounds, playing fields, etc. It has about a third of the roll the American school has, and also has long waiting lists - which are also closed!

Aside from these two - there are a few other private international schools in the region - but none as centrally located as the American and British school.

My wife and I both attended the American Embassy School in the 60s and loved the experience. We returned to visit the school last year and found it to be very modern now (as it was when it was brand new in our day) with much of the old flavor of the school still intact. The teachers we spoke to were enthusiastic about the opportunities students had to learn about Indian culture as well as the standard curriculum. Since it is an Embassy School, there are students from many nations there, a great opportunity to learn about the world. Here is a link to some photos we took while we were visiting in March 08

We did a thread on International Schools, and whether the enormous price difference over local schools is worth it -->here.

There is a short thread on home schooling here.

The OP might find these threads worth a look to get some more perspective on education in India, and the place of international schools within it.

The construction project did limit one of the fields, but there's still a full-sized soccer field, an outdoor field (smaller now, due to portable classrooms on much of it), and outdoor tennis courts. The elementary school has plenty of outdoor playgrounds, which are going to be upgraded soon. And once the construction project is over, the middle school field will go back to its regular size.
