Question Afternoon in Delhi

Hi,

I will be arriving in Delhi around Midday on a Sunday, and staying till the following morning then off on a weeks tour.

Can anyone suggest what I could do on a Sunday afternoon in Delhi?
Thought about Connaught Place but read somewhere it was closed Sundays? Are the bars/restaurants open there?

Would Old Delhi be a bit full on for my first few hours in the city? What can you suggest?

Thanks

Delhi is full of hisorical places, monuments & parks which are all open on Sundays. Although shops in CP may be closed but all bars & restaurants will remain open.
Old Delhi is very fascinating but most of the shops in Chandni chowk will be closed.

I would suggest you decide what kind of afternoon you want to spend, first.

Most everything, except shops in some areas as jyotirmoy mentions, will be open.

My suggestions for possibilities

- Sound and light show at night, Red fort. Do check the English timings, though the Hindi one is the best, if you understand the language.

-Lodhi Gardens

I would have suggested Delhi Haat too, but it is closed on Sundays, I think

Dilli Haat is definitely open on Sundays and is a great option if you want to do some handicrafts shopping.

Dilli Haat is a good option. But during the afternoon you could visit the Lotus Temple. It is one of my favourite spots in Delhi beacuse of its architecture, cleanliness and the peace inside the place. It closes at around 4:30 - 5:00 during winters. In the evening you could go to Dilli haat or the show at Red Fort. You would get Food from different states in India in the different stalls in Dilli Haat plus a lot of handicraft. While buying handicraft be aware that you can bargain a bit.

Thanks for info,

I've heard of the Lotus temple, and as mentioned would be a nice place for a bit of calm. What are your views on a walk around Chandni chowk even if shops are shut? Would it be too full on and hectic for first day in Delhi, get hassle here? or ok on a Sunday? Would it be wiser to stick to New Delhi to begin with?

thanks

Hi traveladdict,

My first day in Delhi, was a Sunday. We went to Connaught Place, all the shops were shut and we were chased out of there by touts hassleing us!
We retreated to the peace of the Red Fort, for a couple of hours!
We then decided to try Chandni Chowk, as it is just across the road from the Red Fort.
We started with the Jain temple, a must see, particularly the bird hospital bit.
Chandni Chowk was crazy, but in a kind of wonderful way, and was definitely the highlight of my first few days in India!
It made me realise how friendly Indian people were, and how safe we felt, compared to most European cities I've experienced.
I would definitely recommend it as an introduction to the wonderful craziness that is India.
Have fun!

Afternoon in Delhi

Why not go to the zoo? That's what we did years ago and enjoyed it tremendously although we're not usually into zoos. Flora and fauna are very Indian, and so are the groups of families having picnics on the lawn. It's crowded enough to give you a feel for the rest of your trip, but restful enough after a long flight. I certainly hope you'll return to Delhi to see all the wonderful things the city has to offer. Whatever you do, you'll be missing something else, so just relax with some chaat in the zoo and if you don't like animals, sit on the lawn like everyone else and watch the people. Wish I could be there with you on Sunday!!

Here I am again. I'd second gurupaulj's suggestion about the Red Fort. We did that once, too just after arriving nd I remember sitting there thinking I'd wasted too many years before coming to India. it's one of my favorite memories of India, so it might be a good idea for you.

An animal in a zoo has a broken spirit and a broken heart. Most of them go mad. I have never been to Dehli zoo but judging by how most animals are treated in India I can't imagine they have a good life.

A zoo has no place in civilised society in my opinion. We just use them to make ourselves feel better that the species we are exterminating in the wild we are actually "saving" by keeping them in zoos.
