affordable accomodation in Delhi

Hi, my name is Barbara and I will be living in Delhi for about 10 months (unpaid internship).I have no clue as to where I should start to look for an affordable place to live (ideally I would prefer to share an apartment with other females). The only thing I know is the location of the office I will be working at: India Habitat Center-Lodi Road. Is there anyone out there who could suggest a good web-site or rental directory I could go to? I would also like to know it were possible to find anything between $250-300. Please, help me! I am fumbling in the dark! Grazie mille!!!!

House rentals

Hi Barbara,

The budgets that you suggest should be adequate to find reasonable housing in a middle class to upper middle class area around your place of work.

I live about 5 Kms from your place of work at Habitat Centre.. incidentally many of the IM meetings in Delhi, end up at the bar in the Habitat Centre. This is a popular middle class area, very centrally located, and I rent a two bedroom + living room apartment, new construction, on the third floor (no lifts) with a large terrace for Rs. 9,500/- That is around US $ 225. You should be able to find similar accomodation in many areas around your place of work.

The rentals of course vary quite dramatically and depend to a large extent. on how posh is the locality that you live in. Rentals also vary from the floor you are on.. However smaller apartments would be usually on the top floor (locally known as Barsati) and these are terrace apartments with 2 rooms or 2 rooms plus living.

If you stay alone.. you could consider such an apartment in more popular areas.. around Lajpat Nagar III, parts of South Extension, parts of Nizamuddin. For a slightly higher budget.. of around Rs. 15,000/- you could get slightly more upscale areas, where the room sizes may be bigger.. in better parts of South Extension, Nizamuddin, Defence Colony.. or even towards Green Park, Safdurjung Enclace etc.. Jor Bagh may be slightly more expensive. but is almost walking distance from your place of work.

While these names may not mean much to you. these are all areas within 5 kms from your place of work. and would generally mean about 15 minutes or so of commuting. An autorickshaw (these are small three wheeler taxis ) would cost you about Rs. 25 - 30 one way... Taxis would cost you around Rs. 60 one way.. These places are in or close to South Delhi, which is still the hub of shopping, eating out, clubs etc..

These apartments are usually unfurnished. though in many of these areas. some landlords are also able to offer apartments with basic furnitures.. at a higher cost.

Since you expect to be here for a period of 10 months.. you have enough time to settle in.. and you would be certainly more comfortable in proper apartment than staying in hotels in Pahargunj area. They leave a lot to be desired in terms of comfort.

I am also sending you the url of another thread started by Indiaworker.. who had similar questions a few months ago.. and is now here India. You would find many of those posts, from various people helpful. Since these are fairly recent you.. the price estimates etc.. would still be generally current and fairly accurate.

I would think that many of your queries should be answered by the above thread and some other similar threads.. Should you have any further queries.. you are welcome to post here.. or send me a PM.
