Accom in Delhi - help

am going to Delhi with 3 friends early Feb. Want a place to stay around Con. Place, pref mid-range. Have been quoted AUD$45 each per night, is this too much to pay for accom? Want something fairly reasonable, comforatable and clean... any recommendations?

You can get perfectly clean, safe and cheap acommodation if you shop around. Try the Hotel Down Town in Pahar Ganj in Main Bazaar right opposite ND station. It is a third of the price you are looking for and quite sound. You might not get a window view but you will get a bedroom door you can lock and a clean mattress.

tel 3555815/6. At 4583 Main Bazaar

This may be totally offbase for your interests- but I would suggest Majna Ka Tilla outside of Old Delhi to stay in. It is a Tibetan section of the city and I found the hotel rooms to be quite clean and comfortable. There are a variety of places there ranging from 200 rps. to 1000 rps. I liked it because it was a relief from the crowds of Pahangarj and it since it is a tibetan area -mostly english was spoken (ok- it was the end of my trip and I needed a resptite from hindi..). Good luck!

The tibetan area of Delhi

Hi Rossinm, we are going to be arriving in Delhi from Australia in a few weeks and were looking at the Tibetan area because we thought it sounded a bit quieter and calmer while we find our feet. Can you recommend anywhere in particular to stay that is pretty cheap (approx 250rps) and nice. Is it easy to travel into the heart of the city from there.

Wongdhen House is one of the finest hotels in the area, and is extremely good value for Delhi. You can probably find something there for Rs. 250, but those would be the ordinary rooms. The best rooms are on a higher floor, facing the river (back side of the hotel), as long as you don't mind climbing stairs. There are plenty of other hotels within a few hundred meters (even some within a few meters!)

MKT is very far north in Delhi, on the bank of the Yamuna river, north of Delhi University. It's not hard to get a taxi down to central Delhi, but a little harder to get back, as some taxi drivers don't know where it is, and auto drivers can be reluctant to go that far. If asking the taxi driver for "Majnu Ka Tila" provokes a blank stare or general confusion, mention the Sikh Gurudwara or the Tibetan settlement, as those might jog the driver's memory.

Majnu Ka Tila is a nice, relaxed place to stay. Good hotels, decent restaurants, plenty of PCOs, internet cafes and travel agents. It's not so much a litttle slice of Tibet as it is a little slice of McLeod Ganj.

One thing I find bothersome about the area, though, is the touts: They're running all the same scams as touts everywhere, but are so hypocritical and racist. All these characters would say "You can trust me, I'm Tibetan. I'm not Indian". They really play to the burned-out tourist, and that I find quite distasteful.

In Karol Bagh I'm considering the Jyoti Deluxe Hotel (be warned that the word "deluxe" doesn't mean what it does elsewhere).

From what I can tell it has both backpacker dorms and proper hotel rooms. I haven't stayed there yet but I'm booking my first night there. Refer http://www.indiamart.com/hoteljyotideluxe

Looks pretty good for the price, timmy!

I especially like the "well mannered security guard"

Please let us know how you find it. It could be a useful addition to the hotel listings section.

I'm also considering a stay at Jyoti Deluxe Hotel (for a group of 25), does anyone happen to know anything about this hotel? I'm a little concerned to have only information from their own website (though everything they say sounds good).

I emailed this hotel asking them to confirm their rate, and they came back to me with Rs.750 against Rs.495 advertised for a single non-AC Super-deluxe room.

I've decided to stay elsewhere, but I'll still stop by and check them out, and see if I can beat them down to their advertised rate.

It's worth a try to get them down to their advertised rate as it looked like a nice place but don't worry, if you venture into Paharganj there are stacks of reasonable places in the 250-500R's price range, some of them in the hotels section of this forum.

Actually I have done that and just got a response saying they would honour the advertised rate. I've since booked my first night elsewhere for now but I'll definitely go and check them out. When I get back I should have five or six reports for you.
