I arrive in Delhi on xmas day. Any ideas on how to spend it? I won't be hankering for the tinsel and turkey of a xmas at home - rather I'd love to do something a bit memorable to mark the occasion.

Hello, with a bit of luck I'll be in Delhi boxing day. I'll probably be spending my evening snoozing off the flight. One of the main reasons for travelling at this time of year was to get away from all the tinsel and silliness.

Completely unrelated to the post, but I am curious as to why some people call 'christmas' as X-mas? I attended Saint Xaviers for my elementary to high school education (and this is what we heard growing up). Haven't heard anyone in US call it X-mas, just wondering why its called so (or is it only people from the Oceania who use this?)

It don't think it's just people from Oceania who use the expression as a lot of UK folks say it. I really don't know why tbh, perhaps it's a christian thing that relates to one of the crosses that one of the disciples/apostles was crucified on. I really don't know tbh, I'm just guessing.

I just use it in writing because I'm lazy and it's shorter...

Using "X-mas" as an abbreviated form of "Christmas" is derived from an early Christian symbol for Christ called the "Chi Rho" (pronouced "ki" (long "i", like "eye") and "row". Chi and Rho are Greek letters. Chi is written "X" and Rho is written "P", and these are the first two letters of the name "Christ" or "Christos" in Greek. The Chi Rho symbol an anagram that superimposes the X and the P together - can't do it on the computer but here's a link with a picture: http://www.rochester.edu/College/REL/symbols/chiro.html

Some fundamentalist types have accused people who use the "X-mas" abbreviation of trying to "eliminate Christ from Christmas", but they're just showing their ignorance of early Christian symbolism.

I tried to get there one year for Christmas. But Aeroflot decided to make me miss my connection in Moscow so I spent Christmas confined to a hotel room at Shevremo (sp?) Airport. Worst Christmas ever. I had planned to attend mass at a Catholic Church in Delhi and some of the people I know in Delhi celebrate Christmas although they aren't Christians. I enjoy seeing the decorations around Connaught Place and Cottage Industries. It's always fun to be someplace warm at Christmas time.
