5 extra days in Delhi area
I'm planning my first trip to India at the moment and as a result of the travel agent messing around with my flight bookings I'm having 5 extra days in the country.. I will have already spent a few days in Delhi before my tour starts and then a couple more as part of the tour so I think I'd rather go and see some other parts of the country instead.
I'm already travelling through Amritsar, Chamba, Dharamsala, Shimla, Agra, Bharatpur, Madhogarh and Jaipur as part of the tour so I'll get a taste of those places anyway. Is there anything near/a day's travelling away from Delhi that you'd recommend? The cheaper and easier the better but any suggestions would be great! Thanks ![]() |

Don't underestimate Delhi as a shopping venue! There are emporiums from each state where you can find all sorts of gifts plus pick up the things you kind of liked but neglected to buy when you were on your tour!
If you leave the tour at Jaipur, you could run down to Pushkar for a couple of days and then head up to Delhi. Or go back to Bharatpur and from there to Deeg. Nainital is nice if you haven't had enough of the mountains... depending on when you are going to be there. (5 months from now, right? January? Mountains will be too cold for me at that time)!

Other options are:
1. Alwar & Sariska wild life santuary (3 hrs from Delhi by road) 2. Corbett national park, Overnite from Delhi by train. This can be combined with Rishikesh and haridwar. 3. 2-3 days for going around Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. 4. One can travel small vilages around Delhi for few days. 5. Small hillstation called Kasauli near chandigarh. 6. Maybe you can leave the tour in Jaipur and get onto the train to Jodhpur / jaiselmer. ...options unlimited ...letme know what you want to do. if you are still left with some money, shoping in delhi is good. Areas to shop are, Janpath, sarojini nagar, Chandni chowk(old Delhi),it also depends on what you want to buy. cheers vinay

if u r in there winter time. Then if u have got back to delhi and wondering what now. Then look up Rishikesh in yr. guide book. Head that a ways. Its worth it. its where the hills start, its where ganga river hits the plains. Rishikesh is 6 hours by bus/train from delhi and so a perfect for s'one who wants out of delhi yet easy to get back. Plenty of buses from ISBT (bus terminus). Can get very cold at nights december onwards. Its not very touristy and cheap accomodation is easily available. Try out 'chotiwala' for a good meal.
I think Alan D would have the latest on this place. all other options involve more travel and distance. Though Kasauli sounds good too. |

Kasauli is not bad If you are in Chandigarh, . it's definately not worth it to come all along from Delhi.
Rishikesh will be a much better option. You can go to shivpuri or maybe up to Rudrprayag. |

As you don't seem to be visiting Varanasi then Rishikesh would be the alternative holy place to visit. I like it for it's peaceful atmosphere, especially the Swarg Ashram area on the East side of the Ganga. It's almost traffic free and you can go for walks along the river or in the surrounding hills.
Rishikesh is also well connected to Delhi by bus and train. You can take a bus from the ISBT (Inter State Bus Terminal) in Delhi directly to Rishikesh. By train from New Delhi Railway Station there are fast Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi trains which go to Haridwar and from there you can take a local bus or taxi to Rishikesh. If you would like to see another hill station then Mussoorie is not far away. |
