1 A.M. arrival in Delhi...hotels open?
it looks like most of the flights i'm finding arrive between midnight and 3 am.
will i be able to find accomodation at this hour or will i be hiding up in a tree somewhere waiting for the city to awaken? |

Not to worry. I just spent 5 weeks in India and every hotel I stayed in had some one on duty 24 hrs a day. They might be sleeping in the lobby but they'll answer. Best to find a place in a guidebook, get a pre-paid taxi (outside of arrivals, NOT inside) directly there. They may try to take you some where else but insist you go where you have booked.

Late night arrival
There are multiple booths where you can pay for a pre-paid cab. It's a bit of a scam it seems but even Delhi Tourism is involved. All of the ones INSIDE the airport charge up to 350 Rs to get to Paraganj or Connaught Place whereas at the small both just outside the exit (before the taxis) it's about half of that. It's a lark. Don't worry, you can just ask the guard at the exit to get back in if you have a problem. The airport is not crazy busy.

Both are inside the arrival area. The 'tourist taxi' counters (along with a host of other counters like hotel booking etc.) are the one you first encounter. Don't fall for those smiling chicks
They'll skin you! Then a bit towards the exit you'll find the 'pre-paid taxi' counters. Usually you'll find a long queue too there. This is for the regular Delhi taxi. |

JYtravel is correct.
I always go to the Delhi police pre-paid taxi booth which is just OUTSIDE the terminal building. Walk up the ramp where people are waiting with name and hotel signs. Turn sharply to the right, avoiding the salivating touts, go through a doorway, exiting the building and you will find on your right the Dehli Police pre-paid taxi booth. Tell them where you want to go, pay your money and you will be given a ticket with your taxi's registration number on it. Find your taxi, get in, and make sure your driver doesn't bring a friend, as this is a way of putting extra pressure on you. I don't think this happens so much now, as security has been tightened up for foreign tourists. Your ticket will be checked by a police post and details entered in a log before you leave the airport. Keep the ticket yourself and do not hand it over to the driver until you reach your destination. Don't be drawn by any recommendations the driver might have, and tell him you are absolutely not interested in shopping after you've had three hours sleep. Happy landings and enjoy your visit to India! ![]() |
