Your suggestions please, for the trip to Darjeeling from Aligarh

Hi Friends:
Have any of you ever travelled to Darjeeling and Sikkim from Delhi or its near-by places, in your own car like Santro. I feel one can enjoy maximum in this way when all the parameters are in one's own hand. I am planning this trip along with my family (Myself (53 yrs old), my wife (48 yrs old), my son (14 yrs old) and a young driver) from Aligarh to Darjeeling and then to Sikkim starting on 20th may, 2009. I would be highly obliged if any of you can share his/her valuable experiences regarding such a trip. Further, kindly suggest what else must be visited among the nearby places of Darjeeling and Sikkim. My trip is of about 15 days. Out of these, perhaps, six days would be used up for our to and fro journey. So, effectively eight to nine days would be in our hand to visit different places in Darjeeling and Sikkim.
I am waiting anxiously for your very valuable and helpful suggestions.
Thanks a lot
MAS.

Hi Delhiwala
Yes, I am sure to do it because this journey, distance wise, would be same as that of the journey to Ladakh . I have done it in the same fashion though the Ladakh’ terrain was very much treacherous and challenging. I always go for such a mode of journey because I feel this is the only way one can enjoy to its maximum. Every thing is in your hand. All choices are yours. So and so, you command your journey in your own way. Starting from your home and reaching to your destination, so convenient. No need to hire any cab/taxi to move around. Every where, it is you to decide where to go and how to go. You are not supposed to follow any one. Move wherever you want in your own way and in your own style. So, this way one is not constrained and free in all respects. Certainly, this sort of freedom one gets at the cost of heavy expense. The choice is yours which thing is more desirable.
These are the factors which always compel me to do the journey by car never mind how far the destination is.
I am looking forward for some very genuine and important tips for our journey from you.
Thanks a lot.

I was concerned about the comfort, I didn't mention costs. It's only 1500 KMs and is doable....afterall people do Europe-India also overland.

Well you may take the following route:

Aligarh-Kanpur-Lucknow-Gorakhpur-Darbhanga-Araria-Siliguri-Matigara-Kurseong-Darjeeling.

Hi:
A professional driver will also be with me. It is decided not to drive more than 600 Km per day. This way perhaps it won’t be very much tiring and uncomfortable. What do you think about it?

I am mainly concerned whether the route, particularly of Sikkim, is do-able with my car (Santro) or not. Kindly help me in this way.

Sikkim has good roads, but car should be in fighting fit conditions. Get a good checkup before start.

Hi MAS,

I saw the above replies and also your PM. Hope your queries have been answered and hence I did not reply to your PM. If you are used to drive for long hours and moreover you have a driver, then it should not be an issue.

If you are adventurous, then try white water rafting on the Teesta River.

Go ahead and enjoy your trip.

Raghu

Thumbs up Aligarh to Darjeeling - On Road

Dear MAS,
Sorry to hear about your health, we surely were looking forward towards your trip. Anyway, a small piece of advice - avoid taking fuel for your car anywhere in the eastern U.P. region as the adulteration is relatively higher therein at most of the outlets. Further, be prepared for not being able to make much halts in Bihar region as you might not get decent family restaurants there. But the drive in Bihar is better than that in U.P. area for sure. I'm sharing the thoughts out of my recent drive fro Kolkata to Delhi along NH-2 which might be different from the route you're going to take.
Take care of your health and Happy Driving..

@ Mas

I wish you a happy journey. I know that such a journey is really thrilling. But you may consider getting an Inner Line Permit. There is a problem with driver also. The drivers has to have a special permit to drive on those roads. So you may have to consider these things.

I am a frequent traveler to Sikkim. I have seen people being harassed by the BRO (Border Road Organization) for bringing drivers who don't have permits to drive over there.

Dear sou.iit
I am really greatful to you for sharing such an important information with me. By the way, do you have any idea how this Inner Line Permit would be obtained. Please, let me know if you have any information regarding this.
Thanks a lot.

Sorry I din't notice that you are from India. In that case you don't need ILP but since you are bringing your personal driver you should talk to the outpost at Rangpo (the entrance of Sikkim). The officers over there will be pretty helpful.

Because of the nature of the road, the drivers should have a special pass. Also, you may consider going to Baba Mandir with your personal driver. It is a forward area, so the defence personnel may ask for many documents.

Typically the cab service in Sikkim is very organised. They have the letters E, W, S or N written on them which signifies the area for which they have permit. A cab with the letter W can only operate from Gangtok to West Sikkim, it will not go to East, South or North.

So as you can imagine the level of security, you can consult the authority at Rangpo, they will help you out.
