where to stay overnight - Darjeeling or somewhere else?

We are a group of 6 friends, 50+ years old, trekking together for the 3rd time. We plan to fly into Bagdogra and trek to GoechaLa and then to Singalila, with a day's rest before, between and after. Should we stay in Darjeeling before, between and after? I am beginning to understand that this is a real city, and we are not city types (we all come from small farming, seaside villages). Can someone suggest a smaller, more quaint and nature-geared town to stay in from which we could reach Yuksom for the start of GoechaLa and then Mahneybang for the start of Singalila? We could always visit Darjeeling for a day if there's something really great to see there...
