trip to sandhakphu

i am planning a trip in late september of 2009 to sandhakphu and phalut. I wanted to know how difficult is the trek to phalut and how long does it take from darjeeling. Where can I get the tour guide for the trek.

to start the trek you need to reach a place called maneybhanjyang on the indo nepal border - about 45 mins max from darjeeling.

day 1: start the trek early in the morning and stay over at tonglu peak /meghma or gairibas. (steep climb up to tonglu/then descend down to gairibas)

day 2: the next day, start for sandakphu. stay overnight. (steep climb till sandakphu via kainyakatta and kalpokhri)

day 3: early morning start for phalut. stay overnight.

day 4/5: from here you can either backtrack and hit rimbick/siri khola... or descend to the last village on this side of darjeeling called ghorkhey and enter sikkim. from there get a cab or bus to reach darjeeling. about 5 hours away

the trek is somewhat tough for the casual trekker. if you are in peak physical form, you can make it to sandakphu in a single day. however, it's best to stop and smell the roses on the way, rather than tiring yourself out.

this is not a true trail... you will need to follow a cobbled path, used by vehicles too (thankfully just one or two the whole day and almost none after 2pm)... unless you want to take the many shortcuts.

the path from sandakphu to phalut is nice. since you plan to go in september, you will need windproof clothing and a wollens.

you can get guides in darjeeling easily. and they can arrange a trip for you, a tea-house trek or a tented one.

however you choose to go, the trek is one of a kind and if you get lucky with the weather, you will be blessed with one of the best mountain views in the world. on a clear day, you will be able to see the everest range, bhutanese himalayas and the kanchendzonga range.
