Singalila Ridge

I'm sure you don't need a guide for this, but as I haven't done the trek myself I'm only going on what other people say. There seem to be enough places to stay along the route.

This site has a short description of the trek and accomodation options. Click on "Trekking" on the side menu, then "Singalila Ridge Kanchenjunga."

One can do Sandakphu Trekking without Guide. But it's better to trekk with a guide. On the way one can find Trekker's Hut on Tonglu- Garibas- Sandakphu. One Can book this Hut from Darjeeling or From Calcutta DGHC office.Other than that some Private lodge is there in Tungling- Kalapokhri- Sandakphu.

I have done this trek 4 times. You do not need a guide. In Darjeeling I stayed at the Aliment, which is at the top end of town, the details are in the Lonely Planet. Darjeeling is full of hotels that cover every budget. The trek to Sandakphu takes 5/6 days, if you do a circular route from Manebhanjang to Rimbik. There are huts evenly spaced about half a days walk apart. Unless it is high season there is no need to book in Darjeeling, just turn up. The costs are Rs100-200 for a bed and a dhal bhat dinner. No showers but you can get a bucket of hot water. The bus to the trail head at Manebhangjang leaves Darjeeling at 7.00AM and costs Rs30, if you sleep in a taxi cost Rs250, both take just over an hour to get there. From Rimbik there are a series of share jeeps back to Darjeeling, they take 4 hours. If you do the trek in winter you will need warm clothing for the evenings (down jacket), it gets bloody cold at night!
www.iaincochrane.co.uk for photos of the trek and Darjeeling/Sikkim area.
Happy trekking.
Iain.

I've stayed at the Aliment a few times. It's well worth the hike up the hill as the owners are very reliable and helpful and the rooms are good. Food is so so but the atmosphere in the restaurant can be great.

Now guide is must for Sandakphu Trekking. You have to take guide from Forest Gate. So, upto Tanglu or Tungling you may move without guide.
