For the sandakphu trek are there lodges along the way or does one have to camp? Food along the way? I'm going to be arriving in the Darjeeling area late this December of 2008 and am looking for a partner and/or some advice for either the sandakphu trek. Anybody interested? jonathandamiani(at)hotmail(dot )com

As Info for the non-indian trekkers (like me)

The Sikkimese State has demanded that the central Indian Gov. drops all restrictions on travel for foreigners to Sikkim.

This would get rid of the line permit and the indians only areas.
Its not gotten through parliament yet but as soon as it does I will post the Info

March 09 in sikkim

Anyone interested in doing treks in Darjeeling/Sikkim around the first half of March 2009 (flexible)?

I've never trekked before, but I really like hiking (ie, the hiking I've been doing while in college in the US, around new england). I'd like to keep costs low but still do the treks. Treks with accomodations on the path are preferred - otherwise, it's more fun but I'd guess a pain getting equipment. Just hiking, no mountain climbing (nothing that requires gear).

hey itamar!

greetings of the season!

there are a few number of trekking spots in sikkim, but in darjeeling there is only one major trekking spot - that is sandakphu. i have never gone for trekking in sikkim, though i traveled to sikkim several times. and i believe if you trek in sikkim, you might need permit, as sikkim has international border with china - and thats a security zone.
for hassle free trekking pleasure, i recommend sandakphu. i trekked to sandakphu twice already. and i am going again around this 25th december. for sandakphu trek, you get accommodation on the way. no mountaineering or climbing gear is at all needed for trek to sandakphu. i can assure you.
and also, if you go with an experienced trekker ... i mean if you trek to sandakphu with someone who has previously trekked there ... it should not cost you more than TWO THOUSANDS indian rupees. really!
wish you all the best.
for any further query, please get in touch.

Thanks!

Any advice would be helpful: is there any part of Darjeeling I'm more likely to meet potential trekkers? If I only meet people who haven't done the sandakphu trek before, will I need to find some guide in town?

(BTW, I can't seem to figure out how to send private messages - does that take time to get activated for a new account...?)

Hi Arindamdhar,
Myself with 3 others are plannig to Trek Dzongri - Goecha la by Last week of September This Year. I am a seasoned traveller as i completed Sikim ( 8 times), Ladakh, Kasmir. But have no experience of trekking. Two of our Four people group have the kind of trek experience, is it possible for the first time trekkers to venture Goechala ? How is the trail? is it too risky?
Please help me out.........

Hi CaroP, i'm was more interested in going for Yuksom - Dzongri trail in Sikkim but Darjeeling - Sandakphu trail is also fine with me (heard its beautiful), i need to complete the trip before the 31st & be back in Mumbai, gotto report to work. Would anybody else join you as well? Please get back to me URGENTLY as i need to start booking my tickets. I would either prefer to leave by 27th/28th Feb and return by 10th/11th March or do a trip starting 14th March onwards. I should get 14-15 days approximately as i can get 10 working days off excluding weekends.

Hi lonelytraveler and CaroP, I am also planning to be in Sikkim from March 14th to 28th (flying back to Kolkata). I was also looking at doing the Yugsom-Dzongri-Goechla trek, which should be possible according to the local tour operator.

Let me know your thoughts, I am currently in Rajastan and will traverse over to Darjeeling / Sikkim during the coming weeks.

Fyi I am male, 32 years old. Did plenty of trekking in Europe but not yet in the Himalayas.

Hi Hakuin/CaroP,

Request you to please let me know about the confirmed plans at the earliest as i need to start booking for my travel & accomodations, besides i would need to apply for leave in my office. CaroP was more keen on Sandakphu trail close to Darjeeling, whereas you seem more keen on Yuksom - Dzongri.
Please keep in mind that tickets would be difficult few days before departure and definitely more expensive. Besides we would also need to take the required permits for visiting such places & will have to bargin with travel agents. I need to inform my office latest by 1st or 2nd of March 2009.

I was in touch with Yak & Yeti at Gangtok and they told me that they might have a trek to Goech La leaving on March 17, duration is 8 days. I plan to go to Sikkim in any case since I already booked a (non-refundable) flight back to Kolkata, but I am somewhat flexible regarding the timing. My original plan was to arrive in Darjeeling on the 12th, spend a couple of days there and then head up to Sikkim. Would this be in line with your itinerary and timing?

Ciao,
Chris

Hi Chris, are you aware of how many people are joining for the trek with Yak & Yeti? I've spoken to an acquaintance in Sikkim and will get back to you about my confirmed plans / itinerary in a couple of days, apologies for the delay.

Regards,
Rohit
