Hi,
I'm new in the forum and I hope the question'll be appropriate.
If not I apoligize in advance.
This is my question:
I'll be in India next November. I'm planning to visit Sikkim and Darjeeling in West Bengala. I would to make a travel with Toy Train from Siliguri to Darjeeling. Is there anyone that has any information on this train? I mean departure time, costs and so on. Moreover the train is one-way? I mean the train goes from Siliguri to Darjeeling and back? Is it a round trip? Is it possible to catch the train from Darjeeling to Siliguri?
Many thanks for any answer.
Bye
Tina

Here you go!

Hi Tina and welcome to India Mike.
The toy train runs in both directions so getting back to Siliguri using the train wont be a problem.
The journey time is around 6 hours but I reckon the ride will be worth the time spent on the train!
The trains leave daily as follow

Train No 1D SILIGURI JN 09:27 DARJEELING 15:30

Train No 2D DARJEELING 10.40 SILIGURI JN 16.38

And to whet your appetite here's a wee link toy train

For other train info you can try here trains

Happy Traveling

darjeeling to njp or other way

Will be going to Darjeeling this winter and am trying to decide whether to take the toy train or not. Two questions:

1) We will be taking the Darjeeling mail (10 hours) from Kolkata to NJP - do people have any opinions on whether we will be in any condition to enjoy the toy train ride after such a journey?

2) ALternatively, we are thinking of taking the toy train down from Darjeeling to NJP - any thoughts on whether the journey is better in one direction or the other?

many thanks,
matal (with life...)

Sally - Welcome to Indiamike... You should book in advance. I see that only first class is available for the next 10 days or so (except the 6th which is not available at all)...

If you don't find availability, you can try the train going down from Darjeeling... that usually has much more availability...

The NJP - Kurseong section is closed since mid June until further notice, for track repair work (after landslide during monsoon). Kurseong - Darjeeling section is fine. So is Darjeeling - Ghum (joy ride).

Happy Deepavali " Festival of lights" to you,

please see this site http://www.indianrailwaysreservation.co.in/

you need to type : NEW JALPAGURI as a Starting station
Darjaleeing for the destination Station ( if you need to travel from NJP to DJ) 1D

or Kurseong as starting station and Darjaleeing as Destination station

this site is user friendly ,

hope the information is what you are looking for

Hi
As a great admirer of the Toy Train ( I used to travel to school in Kurseong by Toy Train } may I explain the current situation. 1.The toy train which runs from Silliguri to Darjeeling uses the orignal coaches BUT NOT the orignal Steam Engine! its replaced by a Mordern Diesel, and as a steam buff you may feel cheated in this respect. 2. its a long journey of about 6 1/2 hrs which is a little cramped and at times rather tedious especially if you have already travelled overnight from Cal. The actual scenic route really doesn't start till Kurseong about 2 1/2 hours into the trip. I would advice take a taxi to Darjeeling and get settled into your hotel early, promise, you will have missed nothing, all will become clear read on 3. You need to get a seat on the LEFT going up if you want to get a good photo shoot so this could depend on a bit of push n shove in cramped conditions. Get the picture? 4. Note:suricate post points out that the NJP-Kurseong section is closed. 5. Always difficulty in getting confirmed seat bookings. OK now for some GOOD NEWS.
The Orignal Toy Train does a 1 hour tourist trip from Darjeeling to Ghoom via the Batasia Loop and back. This is plenty good enough. Book this at Darjeeling Stn I think there is a morning and afternoon run. although, the time I went to book they said it was full I didn't take no fro an answer and thus cited the foreign tourist act'.. I've come from the otherside of the world blah blah..'and this oscar winning / whinning performance worked, paid my Rs.5 and was on my way. The story gets better: I approached the engine driver and mentioned the school I used to go to in Kurseong and the toy train station at my school!!He immediately took me to the VIP coach and found me a seat!sorry I digress. There is another Toy Train run which goes from Darj to Kurseong and for those who wish to experience a longer ride and get some 'pics' in this is a good trip, you can do it on your way back to NJP. and taxi down. My favourie photo shoot point is at Batasia Loop. Great vantage points to photograph toy trains / mountain scenes.
Happy Travels

Tina,

did u booked toy train tickets? I am planning to go there on Nov 19th. I am not able to find toy train in any of the travel sites looks like it is not running any more as somebody rightly pointed out. Also, could anybody here share experience with sterling resorts? I have booked a compact room there for 5 days.

You can book Toy train on cleartrip but from Kurseong to Darjeeling only. The line from New Jalpaiguri to Kurseong is under construction. Good luck
