Hotel suggestions for Darjeeling DEC 2009
Hello everyone, I'm going on a trip to darjelling and sikkim in december this year. Considering that december is very cold month, i hope the prices of hotels are low in darjelling.
I would like to stay in an affordable hotel with good facilities. i'm not looking for posh accommodation. all i need is a neat room with a good view and a room heater would be a great add on. all i want to pay pay per day is 500-700 bucks. Please suggest some hotels with above specifications thanks and regards, santosh saladi |

Snowlion Homestay seems to be what you're looking for: www.snowlionhomestay.com.
I have not stayed and don't know anyone who has, but it appears to have a great rating on Trip Advisor. |

The cheaper rooms in Hotel Dekeling should fit your budget. The smaller attic rooms are cozy in winter.
Old Bellevue (behind Shangri-La - there are four different Bellevue hotels) 1st floor rooms are spacious, have a nice view, but don't know how well they are heated in winter. Most hotels will give you a heater and a hot water-bottle in winter. It will be cold though - so plenty of warm clothes. Even in our house, in Dec/Jan we end up wearing hats in bed. It's almost impossible to keep the rooms warm! |

The cheapest room at Hotel Dekeling is only about Rs.100 less than Snowlion while the single rooms at Old Bellevue are Rs.600 more than Snowlion.
Emmaindarj's advice regarding the cold is worth taking note of. Better to have enough warm clothing than less. Check out this link: http://www.inasra.com/india/West_Ben...ilee%20Complex and on the page that opens up, use the drop down menu under 'Navigate to Hotel' and there are a whole list of hotels with prices, like Pineridge Hotel (from Rs.447) and Hotel Fairmont (from Rs.635). Good luck! |

One of the Bellevue hotels has rooms for Rs.300 and Rs.600 (negotiable).
I don't know how much snowlion is but dekeling has some rooms from Rs.550 (last time I checked, only one or two, and they are often booked). In winter I usually wear thermal inners or track under my jeans, two pairs of socks, warm boots, full sleeve thermal vest, at least 2 more layers, then sweater and jacket. When it's really cold, add hat, scarf, gloves, shawl etc. (you will end up looking like the michelin man, but it's not worth it being cold. Thermal inners are available relatively cheaply in Darjeeling. Pukka ones are a little expensive (at least 600-800 per set) but you can pick them up at the local markets for 300-400 per set. If you won't use them where you live, and it's just for a few days, it's probably not worth buying the more expensive outdoor wear. Usually, lots of layers will keep you warmer than one heavy layer. Hats, scarves, gloves etc are also available cheaply at all the stalls in Darjeeling. Plenty of outdoor shops selling decent quality "North Fake" fleece for Rs. 400 - Rs.600. You can pick up other cheap woolens (sweaters etc) from Rs.80 (nothing very stylish, but will keep you warm). You'll see the snow-capped mountains from Darj or Gangtok, but if you want to be in the snow, you'll have to go to a higher altitude - it rarely snows in either of these places, and when it does, it's usually just for one or two days in the entire winter. Hope some of this helps |

The original Bellevue (the one that was already there before they "multiplied") has wood stoves in the upper-floor rooms, you'll have to pay for the wood though.
Tariff in December is INR 800 for a single room and INR 1000 for a double room. |
