HMI Darjeeling - Basic course

I have applied for the basic mountaineering course which is starting this September at HMI. I have generally got good feedback on the course but just happened to read this blog on the course which was conducted during summer this year.
http://whereisholden.blogspot.com/20...mi-part-i.html

He talks about an overcrowded class, packing 117 students in to a class which could handle only 70. And also some comments about safety!

Any thoughts from someone familiar with the institute? Not that I am rethinking about attending, I am anyway game for it. Just wanted to know some comments from the experienced trekkers. Also anyone who will be taking the course at the same time?

HMI is good reputed institute ..in some exceptional cases they might be packing more trainees in one batch ...about safety - they dont take any gurantee of any trainee - altough they'll take as much as precaution as they can...if you follow your instructor's advice correctly you'll be fine !

Last time I checked(which was few days ago), they still had some seats. Just download the application and medical form from the website and send 'em back filled with a RS.4100 DD and you are ready to go! There are other payment options, you might want to talk to their office calling the number given in the website.

Hmi

Preference given to Govt nominees from AArmed forces, BRO, CRPF, Police etc. Seats get filled very fast. Apply in advance.

A piece of HMI trivia - Late Tenzing Norgay was the first Director of Field Training and Major Nandu Jayal was first Principal. HMI was instituted with Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru's vision and support.

Course is real tough. They train in Sikkim himalayas in high altitude. Participants require very high fitness levels.

Hi Prasannaj,

I have done basic from NIM and advance from HMI (2003).. can draw a comparison between the two..

NIM always emphasizes on the technical aspect of climbing whereas HMI prefer building physical ability and endurance more than technical skills..
Gears and equipments will be mostly brand new but nobody is interested to teach the proper use of them.. unlike NIM.
Don't bother with the food.. it's same everywhere..
Safety measures can not be expected at its best as far as HMI is concerned but you can take this as an opportunity to learn crisis management at mountain..
Prepare for long treks with good amount of load.. physical fitness is must for HMI tranings.

Having a prior experience from a better institute, HMI may look like a 'HAP Making Institute', but for a beginner it might be a good learning...

Don't get upset.. go for it.. just remember, every incident, each problem is a learning in mountain.. more the problem you face more experienced you become...

Enjoy!!!!

Private course of 16 days near Manali, run by Kaushal, an experienced mountaineer himself.
