Darjeeling - Varanasi Christmas time

We have booked trains and accommodation to Darjeeling no problem (except where to buy some winter clothes now!) but are running into trouble getting from Darjeeling to Varanasi.
The trains appear to be all booked out when checking on the IRTC website ...
Does any lovely person out there have any suggestions on how to get from DJL to Varanasi or near Varanasi on the 22nd December?

Plane, train, bus, car, ??

2 suggestions.
1. Make sure you are checking trains from New Jalpaiguri to Mughal Sarai. I saw at least one train that had RAC.
2. If you are still having problems, try making your departure station Delhi. You will have to pay more but you increase your chances.
Make sure you do this today! It looks like time is running out for the train.

buddy theres a service in indian railways called tatkal reservation . they give this reservation 5 days before the departure of the train. but you need to be ready with the website , internet connection , and credit card details by morning 8 am ..and you should boomas soon as the reservation opens.or be ready at the reservation counter by 7 .30 and stand in the que and be first in the line. all theese should be done as they give only few berths for tatkal quota
