hi!

1. Firstly, it will be difficult to find the hotels in this range in October (high season). Hotels would have doubled their tariffs. You may be able to find rooms for around 600 - 700 per dbl.

2. To travel cheaply, find the proper stand where you can get share cabs going to your destination. For example, look for the kalimpong stand in Darjeeling - check out the timings and you may be able to travel cheap. However I have to warn you that they will really pile up a lot of people and you may end up feeling like sardines stuffed in can!
You can also reserve the front (3 seats) + middle (4-5 seats) for your family - I mean that you can buy some extra seats (as fare is on per seat basis) and travel more conformatbly.

Enjoy your trip. Expect cold weather, dress up warm and travel light.

Within the desired price range, u should go for Holiday Homes. Lot of Banks/PSU/Private Organisation have their own Holiday Homes in Darjeeling and their booking is done mostly from Kolkata. Try www.holidayhomeindia.com & I am sure u will get lot of options. Happly journey!

hi,

I am not so sure about the hotel range, however there are lots of hotel springing up.You'll have to look out for cheap ones...if you wish to travel cheaply yes the shared jeeps are the best...i have travelled to many places in india using this facility....you can book the middle row i think they seat 4 to 5 people...you can pay for an extra seat and sit comfortably....i have never experienced being sandwiched, but if you are used to travelling in your owm vehicle or a reserved one then possible you'll feel it a bit crowded....how many days will you be in darj. This year it will be different...as they have decided that the locals wear the traditional dress...its going to be new experience for us....hope it will be same for you as well...i'll be in darj till 31 st oct
