darjeeling shut downs

hello,
I was going to post a different query about Darjeeling and the Himalayan steam railway, but have just found about the political problems and occassional shutdowns in the area.
I was planning to be there from 20/12/09 to 26/12/09, then travelling by road to Bhadrapur airport and flying down to Katmandhu.
I'm cautious about this whole leg of my trip now, and wonder if I should reconsider...
Has anyone heard any recent news about the situation?

Er, well, they're said to be currently over, but it's really unpredictable.

yes, I suppose its just the luck of the draw really on the day.
I've left a lot of my trip open, to work out when I get there and start to get a feel for the country (first visit to India), but was planning on making some firm arrangements for Darjeeling, partly because we'll be there for Christmas and I thought it might get heavily booked at that time, and also my travelling companions have commitments in Nepal on 28/12/09 so we can't really afford to be stuck there.
I'll mull on it...
