Christmas Day(Night actually) Arrival in Sauraha, Nepal

Joliecoeur, Your question reminded me of my first time arrival, and unfortunately only arrival, in Nepal on Christmas Day 2000.

With two old and several new friends I travelled in a minibus from Varanasi to Sauraha, the tourist village accomodating visitors to Nepal's Chitwan Game Park. Our privately engaged bus lost its way to Sauraha but we arrived two hours late via a back road and guided by a Japanese girl who hitched a ride to her ashram.

The Christmas Day weather was sunny and still - low 20's C. Although nights were quite cold, the weather was sunny and clear in the Terai and later also in Kathmandu until New Years Day when I returned to Delhi. The weather can be great at low altitude during Christmas.

Even in 2000 our road trip was made miserable by Maoists and others. Our Indian minibus was stopped at least twelve times for "tolls" demanded at primitive roadblocks on the roads between the border and Sauraha. Later, our regular 'Greenline' passenger bus was delayed by burning tyre roadblocks on the highway into Kathmandu and unable to cross the city until rescued by riot police including a jeep escort. The few Sri Lankan and Indian tourists on the bus were distressed as the rioters in Kathmandu were threatening and actually beating any people they took to be Indian.

If I was going to spend Xmas in Nepal I think I would head for Pokhara - much warmer and much less polluted than Kathmandu, plenty of hotels and restaurants to choose from and a nice lake surrounded by hills.

Not much of a club scene, but ideal for geriatrics with poor circulation! Oh dear, not very good copy for the place! It really depends what you're looking for.
