Hi Mahmud,
Thank you very much for your very friendly invitations and patience with the many questions. May I ask a few of my own? If my company allows it, I am planning to travel in Eastern India in December and January. 1. What is the weather like in Bangladesh (wet? cold?) 2. Will there be a lot of tourists in Dhaka? 3. What cities or villages outside of Dhaka would be a good representation of traditional life in Bangladesh? and finally... 4. What are the top 5 sites that you believe a tourist should visit anywhere in your country? Thanks again for all of your great responses! |

I just started planning my trip and though I don't have too many questions at the present. couple things come to mind..
1. Will be there around end of Oct and Nov. Okay to travel those months. Any areas to be avoided. It says those months are cyclone season..is that true or did i just read wrong. 2. Not a typical westerner traveling in Bangladesh..Indian origin with US passport. Other than local clothes anything else I should think about. 3. Is it easy to travel without a fixed agenda. Just go with the flow. What are some things/places which I MUST plan ahead and if so how far ahead. (i know vague question) Thanks... |

Hi,
I'm also interested in travelling from Delhi to Bangladesh. I rarely don't know about this land. The idea just came up yesterday. Some questions: 1. Is it safe to travel? 2. Where is the best destination to fly to? We would like to see the woods and the beach. We plan to have 3 weeks time. 3. What are the must sees? Thanks for any input |

Hello there,
Thanks for your post. 1. Yes, defenitely Bangladesh is totally safe for traveller. 2. Kolkata-Dhaka or Kolkata-Chittagong is the best route for you. Chittagong region is the best for wood and beach (Cox'sBazar) 3. In Dhaka: Ahsan Manzil, Lalbag Fort, National Memorial, National Meuseum and many more In Chittagong Region: Chittagong Hill tract (need prior permission), Cox'sBazar, St. Martin (Very nice coral Island), 2nd world war cemetry, Mainamoti(Comilla-Buddist montestory 8-10th Century) and many more. Thanks, Saiful Dhaka |

I know nothing more about it (not even what precisely is going on there -- frictions between tribals and Bengalis and the state I believe?), but aren't the Chittagong Hill Tracts to be approached with some caution & decent up-to-date information?

The Hill Tract area in the recent months has been fine. No friction. But situtation change depending on things...like elections which are coming up soon.
You have to take permission to go to Bandarban and Rangamati P.S The Bandarban fax number in Lonely Planet is WRONG. The digits are reversed. Last digit is 2nd last and 2nd last is last. |

I was in CHT in January 2008 and it's a place that is most definitely to be recommended. You do have to get permission before you travel and when in Rangamati you are not allowed out on your own after dark. The place was swarming with military and police, adnittedly the Home secretary from the then caretaker government was visiting the earea at the same time as me. I hired a boat on kaptai lake and had to have a military escort. It looked quite funny actually with my guide, the boatman and 3 soldiers accompanying me around the lake villages. I would have no hesitation in going again though, in fact, I'm just researching Khagrachari in CHT as a place to visit this year.
