Thank you again Tim. At first I am expressing my view from my practical experience. Like IM, I am also regular member of another travel site Thorn Tree. So, I discuss many backpackers every day. Some of them come to Bangladesh. Among them half portion is solo women backpackers. They stay at my home with my wife; we go outside (countryside also) in weekends. The women wear T-Shirt/Polo shirt & Jeans pant. But the girls or I never faced any difficulty/comment in any areas of Bangladesh. So, I think kameez/half sleeve Skirt/T-shirt/shirt & full pant/jeans pant/Salwar is suitable for women traveling in this region.

I discussed with my wife. She also supported me.

Tim in Ireland.
and I have been to countries where one of the first questions asked is "are you a Muslim?", and where, at airports, books, personal photographs and symbols of other religions may be confiscated.

the countries Tim mentions do not belong to my category. Guess what i am trying to say is, we should differentiate between countries and extreme countries!

Have been to countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt and Pakistan. Like Tim, would like to go again.

Yes, though Bangladesh is a muslim country but it is moden enough. Here you will find very few women with vail, people are pious but not fundamental.

Only a few people (less than 1% of total population) protested against Taslima. So, they dont represent a country.

Bangladesh is one country I would visit again, anytime.

Sam, we must diffrentiate between politics/extreme views and the attitudes of normal people.

Else no country in the world is worth visiting.

Now then, Bangladesh is one place I'm seriously thinking of visiting. I have numerous plans for this coming december/January and one of the options is to visit Bangladesh. I've been quoted £2600US for a tour of Bangladesh by a Bengali tour company but I think this is too expensive. I'm not a young person anymore , so would not be your average backpacker. Do you think it would be cheaper for me just to fly to Dhaka and then link up with a tour operator there or would it be quite simple (and cheaper) just to get there and make my own way around the country?

I can not imagine that someone can ask you £2600 for visiting bangladesh. I think you can visit whole yaer through this amount.

The option is : You come Bangladesh first. Then hire a guide (It is cheap. You can hire a guide only for USD 10-15/day) & then explore this beautiful country. In that case you have to spend USD 500-700 per month (maximum)

If you need any specific info, please feel free to ask me.

Though start of monsoon, even I thik that you will not face any problem to travel that time. Because in Bangladesh usually rain falls 2-3 days a week during monsoon. So, dont worry.

BTW, by which border you are entering? If from Benapole, then first go to Khulna (Sundarbans area) then come to Dhaka.

hey mahmud, thanks for the reply!

I wanted to go to the Sundarbans area but i figured in early june the rains would make it hard to travel but since you said that ill probably travel there. Also, would you recommend the Rajshahi division or the Dhaka Division more. I'm looking for off the beaten track, well i guess its all of off the beaten track, im looking for um...well i dont know..Bangladesh!

since I last posted in this thread, I approached another Bangladeshi tour operator and the price quoted has shot up to over $6000US. Admittedy there are 4 plane journeys in that cost but I still think it is fantastically over priced. I would like most things sorted before I arrive in Dhaka, that's why I'm continuing to try to find a decently priced tour operator but, goodness me, it's proving difficult. BTW, I've booked my flights and I'll be in Dhaka 26th December ....I'm getting excited already
