Question What's happening in Kathmandu?

Another large protest today, black-outs, unrest, anybody there to give an unfiltered update? International Media Reporters welcomed! Thank you

Sri Lanka seems to be bracing for a return to civil war as well

I know one thing, I've spent my life chasing mountains and these are the grandaddies of them all

So unless they stop me at the border, within a couple of months I'll be sleeping in Katmandu, revolution or not

PS The nightly world news said a curfew was in a effect until future notice

The reporter and newshound in me wishes I was there.

Here's what I know from my post in Andhra and emails from the Embassy, as well as a friend who's now in Kath, but getting out of Dodge!

Email from the US Embassy in Kat, as of Friday, says:
-There is a curfew on from 8am till 6pm and then again 8pm till 4am (!) with *shoot to kill* orders issued for violators.

-Cell phone access has been cut and regular phones may go at anytime.

-An American-based NGO has been threatened, and Maoists have bombed banks and govt. offices.

Headlines on Indian news, TV and papers, in India say:
-Over 300 arrested in pro-democracy demonstrations in Basanatapur Square.
-Hundreds of party members and political activitsts jailed, some under house arrest (ie soldiers surrounding their residences)
-TV stations that covered the arrests and protests have been blacked out! FYI, media criticism of HM's govt. has been a punishable offense for some months now.
-Kofi Annan is pissed off (for real).

The net here is not working well - later I will post the entire text of the US Embassy's email advisory.

Hindu Newspaper reporting very much as Sirensongs says. Also arrest of literary figures at a peaceful protest during which some were injured. Report stresses that daytime curfew has been added to nighttime curfew.

Sounds like a place not to be

Heard from our suppliers today, who are pretty cavalier at the worst of times, are telling us to hold tight for a month or so - in other words don't book anything & stay put.

This looks like the worst situation in Nepal for many years, going back to the pre democracy days. The King has not only the Maoists to contend with, but the whole of the previously democratically elected government.

I have normally been relaxed about the dangers of visiting Nepal in recent years as all parties seemed determined to protect the tourist trade, but the civil war about to break out on the streets of Kathmandu is a new and alarming development for those considering visiting the country.

The Nepal king has pretty shady circumstances around him when he came to power and acceptence was not whole hearted by the masses> i wont rule out that simmering disgust have culminated into present devide and blood on streets or atleast its one of he major factors. I agree, even if one made it to Kathmandu, wandering around the countryside by yourself would be foolhardy. This will be the second time I put my trip on hold, once for fire, once for war

I would hope they come to terms, but it doesn't appear likely in the near future.

Perhaps another cease fire this spring?

Last one in Sept-Jan was timed to coincide with the big tourist season. Second Season is March-April, so maybe...?

Things seem to have calmed down there momentarily. Tourists are still not being targetted - it's demonstrators, banks, security posts and govt. offices.

Good point, things may be "calm" for the tourist - relatively speaking - but the local people have much more to deal with. What we see as visitors is usually the ice cube on the tip of the iceberg. I hope Nepal gets to return to its old slogan "N E P A L - Never Ending Peace And Love."
