Just had an email from a friend in the Everest region at the moment.

Everything seems as normal as it gets!

dont worry. flights and communication are normal now. you can get best bargain deals from hotels. lots of security on roads. good thing is that since the day king took over the reins, we havent heard a single incident by maoists which was so common before.

My friend arrived back from Nepal a couple of days ago.

He had flown from Kathmandu to Lukla and had about 10 days trouble free trekking in the Everest Region. This was with a UK based trekking company.

He also spent a few days in Kathmandu and visited Bhaktapur.

In Kathmandu the market in Basantapur Square was operating as usual but he says there were very few foreign tourists around.

I'm not recommending here whether to visit ot not - just reporting one person's experience. Some countries have advised their nationals not to visit Nepal and the situation could change at any minute.

However, all sides in the conflict in Nepal realise the importance of tourism to the economy of the country.
