Nepali, Hindi, Newari, English are the main languages spoken. Nepal is an ethnic moasaic of peoples and groups. Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burman, Tibeto-mongol, aging hippies - you name it!

Barren? How so? It's pretty damn green! You may be thinking it's like Ladakh --??? It's not!

Kathmandu may also be a bit of shock if you're expecting some "Shangi La" experience ... it has about a million and a half inhabitants and VERY bad air pollution!

I am surprised and saddened that Kathmandu is that big, I want to know about the road that goes between it and Gonpatang.

I'm surprised but happy to hear it's green (although not 100% convinced), info is sketchy, got any links?

Thanks

Check out the images of Kathmandu on Google Earth! You can also get a fair idea of how green it is between there and Darjeeling. Remember, Kathmandu is only at about 4000 feet and has a fair amount of rain and a mild climate. Actually, it's sort of sub-tropical. Cool map, by the way.

nepalis speak gorkhali language.
gorkhali = nepali.

it is a bit similar to hindi and has the same script. also, it is very very very similar to kumaoni pahadi (our native language that we speak in kumaon). so i guess i can easily understand gorkhali.

some stuff which might help u in nepal:

1) ram ram hujoor (it is the way to greet ppl)

2) kasto chaa?? ramro chaa?? (how're u doing?? fine???)

3) timi gorkhali manchii chaa??? (r u a gorkha chap??)

4) mansud = meat (when u wanna have non veg for a meal)

5) naati = kids

6) thull = big

Very good, if I could accomplish only one trip during my stay it would be to travel the northern route from Kathmandu to Ganpatang. By the northern route I mean over to Dingla and up through Sibrung. You can see this route on this map. I'll do more than this, but if I could do but one, I think this would be the best trip

I realize you've never been there and I also realize No one can say for sure if the trip is possible under today's political climate. But I would like your impressions and/or the impressions of your friends. Normally I travel by motorcycle but if necessary I could try to find an open topped 4 wheel vehicle and a guide since the chances of getting a guide with a motorcyle is very remote. However, I am not totally against going alone if necessary and/or remotely possible

Thank you

PS: Despite the political climate, everything I read says the Nepalese are a good gentle people, I'm sure there were always a few dangerous people, even before this unrest. I'm also not sure much has changed, I can't speak with anything more than a feeling combined with a guess and a hope, but destiny will rule as always
