Just this evening I was talking to a lady (experienced trekker and fairly fit) who did EBC last October.

She said she did feel cold. It went to minus seven Celsius (around 4th October).

Difference is living in a log hut and tent. The log huts are very warm, inside temp is maintained at around ten degrees higher.

Once she had to go outside to pee and it was unbearably cold. I have had a sixteen year old healthy boy FAINT outside at night for the same reason.

One of the rules is to drink as much water as possible. My thumb rule is "If your pee is colourless, and your potty comes out fast enough, you are adapting well to altitude". Now everyone knows that you pee a lot in cold weather. Even at night.

This lady made an ingenious invention. She carried an empty bottle of local mineral water with her to bed and peed in it. No leaving the warm log hut. She did fine.

In this case, Janet can very easily do EBC in November, I am probably being overcautious. Take the pee bottle

SIDE STORY:

One of "my children", then fifteen, did the same peeing trick on a Langtang trek. Unbeknownst to him, his partner drank the liquid from the pee bottle at night. He should have kept quiet coz the sleepy eyed fellow did not know what he drank in his sleep in a hazy dream like state.

But boys will be boys. This chap discovered that he had "hardly any pee" left to throw that morning, so he asked his partner. The partner unknowingly replied "yes" and this was broadcast around town. There was a proper quarrel where some senior had to step in. The story reached my ears ONLY after we were back in Mumbai

So.... Janet.... GO in November. Keep an empty bottle handy at night and just warn your partner about its intended use... just in case.

Thanks Avidtrekker, such a valuabe story and tips for me, good idea!!

Must drink a lot of water to maintain our body healthy at such envirnoment.No need to worry must go outside the hut, can settle inside the hut with the empty bottle.

Adding to Avid's 'tips' - and if you do go outside for quick pee, make sure you have your boots on, unlike one of the fellows in my daughter's expedition on Mt Cho Oyu last year (and he is a mountain guide himself) who foolishly went without his boots for a few minutes to do this. They were up at the last camp on the mountain - he had to return to Base because of frost bite on his toes, and my daughter was left to summit it solo, which she did.

Wah...jus like watching movie but its real life experience..More headache for me, i really feel scare in my heart, need to be more careful and alert for the trek.. seem i always so forgetful, take things easily, is a hardwork for me to crack my head

Hi Aishah, do remember to let me know when she does Mt. Everest (your daughter, I mean) ... 2009, I think? ... if that coincides with my 2nd trip to EBC area (to visit Gokyo) I would love to meet her and say "Hi, I am your Mom's friend! so, tell me now, in detail, how it felt to be up there?"

Janet: EBC is pretty OK to do ... and not really very tough as I worried (before doing it) in Oct-07 ... There will hundreds of people on the trail .... Just have adequate Fleece-Jacket, Monkeycap, Gloves & Sleeping Bag. Hope you have seen the other EBC thread where I posted plenty of details from my EBC-Trek: HERE

Second "boots on". Even though they are a pain to put on at 2 AM with a bursting bladder.

Another tip:

Before peeing at Gorak Shep in a bottle in the dark, Please practice peeing in a bottle at home in the dark. For a female, its not that easy.... let me assure you....

Thanks KS, i will keep your thread as my reference.. Well, my friend cant make it in Oct, so maybe do it in Nov 08,...scary nightmare for me!! If i can keep warm with adequate things, should be alright.

I m confirmed going on 31 Oct till 13 Nov, trek 11 days, IS there any difficulties to find the accomadation during the trek...As my travel company not incude the above

And during NOv, any snow there?
