Were you travelling in India in 1991
I'm writing a novel, part of which is set in India and Pakistan in 1991. One of my characters crosses the Indian Pakistan border overland. Which was the crossing used in 1991? If he had wanted to do it illegally, where might he have done it?
My own experience of travel in India dates from 1970 - 75 and is not relevant to my novel. Any help would be much appreciated and I'll credit you in the book when it is published.? Last edited by machadinha : Jan 2nd, 2007 at 10:43. Reason: moved to crossing borders forum |

The legal point overland is the Wagah border post enroute from Amritsar to Lahore.
Illegally it could possibly be on a small fishing boat from the Maharashtra/Gujarat coast across the Arabian sea to land near Karachi. |

In 1991, one could have crossed through the Wagah border at Punjab (legally). Illegally, it is very risky, but the Ran of Kutcch (Gujarat) and certain sectors in Rajasthan are used by smugglers and Jammu (Poonch sector) is popular among Pakistan-trained terrorists. Bhaswaran ![]() |

is enough to fuel your stories. If you're looking at an exotic angle, then the camel trails across Rajasthan is one helluva way to do it. So does the Rann of Kutch area of Gujuarat. & this could probably be useful too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Creek

Second Bhaswaran and sanjay specially on illegal crossings.
Most commonly used illegal ways, even today. |

In 1991 thousands of Kashmiri youths actually crossed over into Pakistan administered Kashmir for terrorist training in camps set up by Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence. Across the entire stretch of LOC, from Rajouri, Poonch, Baramula, Uri etc, it would be a very likely scenario.

There is another route, the Attari-Lahore Samjhauta Express, a train that runs between India and Pakistan.
There is also Srinagar-Mujaffarabad bus service started recently in Kashmir. All two are legal ways. regards, Bhaswaran ![]() |
