Welcome to Dhaka in February.
February is the month of Bengali Language movement. In 21st February 1952 couple of students dedicated their lives in Dhaka to save Bengali Language from Pakistani ruler. So, 21 st February observed here with joy & sorrows. To honour their souls, 21 st February declared as INTERNATIONAL MOTHER TONGUE DAY by UNESCO.
The largest month long Book fair of Bangladesh also started from 1st of February. So, all Indiamikes are invited to join that Festival & book fair. |

Yes, February is the month of Festival for Bangladeshies. The month started with Seminar, Simposiums, Street Drama, Book Fair & other activites about Bengoli Language.
In the midnight of 21 st February, evry year thousands of people with floral wreaths and bouquet gather Shahid Minar (martyrs monument) to pay respect in a solemn atmosphere. Shahid Minar is the symbol of Bengali nationalism. This monument was built to commemorate the martyrs of the historic Language movement of 1952. This day also observed throughout the country with same honour. So, you are most welcome to Dhaka. |

Shahid Minar
21st February is Language Martyr's Day (Bhasha Andolon Dibosh) and here is a visual about the Shaheed Minar where our language martyr's were gunned down on 21st February 1952.
A very solemn day to remember --- because of their sacrifice we can still speak in our beloved Bangla. BTW Shaheed Minars were erected in Los Angeles and New York too this year -- among other world cities. All Bangladeshis will walk barefoot to place wreaths at exactly 11:59 PM midnight on 20th February. ![]() |
