Thailand is perfectly safe, and it is very easy to find your way around. No need to book with a tour operator - just book a flight and go! You'll easily meet other travellers when you're there.

It can be a bit more unsafe, if one is planning on an encore. But, as you are going there for the first time, you should be OK.

Btw, As Mickey points out, It is quite easy to find your way around. A couple of hours on Thorn tree might give you a better idea on Places to see, etc.

Why do you think it's safer the first time than on subsequent visits?

Its absolutly safe! ... I went there and had a side-trip to Cambodia to visit Ankor Wat last year and it was a fantastic experience .. and I did it as an independant traveller. The main thing is to research before you go and give yourself options!

Enjoy

Allen.
