Waggah Border Crossing to Pakistan!

I want to cross the border into Pakistan from India. How far is it (how long does it take) from Amritsar to Waggah? I'd like to watch the closing of the border ceremony so would probably watch that one evening, stay overnight and cross the following day. Is there anywhere decent to stay near the border crossing??

I did the corssing last year. The walk across is not too long. The paperwork (immigration and customs) is the only hold up. You can be across in half an hour. On my way into Pakistan it took a few hours as Indian cricket fans were allowed to use the land route. One the way back it was very quiet and I got over very quickly.

I did not see any hotels very close to the Indian side. There were places to eat but no hotels. I suppose you could stay the night in Amritsar as there are hotels there.

Thanks Shere! Do you have a rough idea of how long it takes to get from Amritsar to the border? and would you advise getting a taxi or is there a bus?

I did this some time back but it is a relativey easy proceedure. The officials will be glad to chat with some visitors as the crossing is relatively quiet - if they ask you to have tea please accept. Carry no alcohol.

45 minutes to the border by taxi from Amritsar best by cab.

I would recommend timing your crossing to co-incide with the daily show of shutting the gates usually performed by the soldiers of both countries at about 4pm. You will have to deal with all the paperwork before this and the officials will let you watch the ceremony from the Pakistan side - better as the sun will be bshind you at this stage of the day.. You can then proceed into Lahore - 40 minutes.

You can usually find money changers and a taxi just outside the border post when you go into Pakistan.

All bests

Does anyone know if a Bangladeshi can cross the border to Pakistan and back by the same route?

Both Pakistan & India Air fly between Delhi (DEL) & Lahore (LHE). Alternatively, I just bought a ticket on Jet Airways from Delhi to Amritsar--& will then go across the land border.

Wagah border

In view of the terrorist attack in mUmbai, is the Wagah border post between India and Pakistan open now ? And,is it likely to be open in Sept.-October 2009 ? My friends and I am planning to do the London-Delhi journey by car at about that time, this will involve crossing over from Pakistan to India. Any help with info about the border crossing will be much appreciated.

Steadyfriend,

I would imagine that it entirely depends on what sort of passport you're carrying. A UK passport would probably be best. Still, September 2009 is a long ways off, in diplomatic terms. A lot could happen. And, of course, if you don't get through Wagah, you're not going to be getting through anywhere else.

Still, India and Pakistan try to keep a minimal flow of traffic across the border even when things are tense, if only as a gesture of good will. Neither country is seriously interested in escalating hostilities beyond the level of heated rhetoric. And the odd mortar shell and machine-gun round.

Just make sure you've got your paperwork in order, though. Especially the International driver's license.

Thanks, indiaprof for the info. Yes, I do have a UK passport, will be armed with both the UK and International driving licences and I know Sept./Oct. is a long way off, but car journeys such as these have to be necessarily planned much in advance. Will scratch your brains once again nearer the time !

PS - I too love to ride on a cyclerickshaw !

Hi! Im equally interested on the India-Pakistan border-crossing at Wagah. If it is too difficult to cross then may have to plan something else (Travel from Malaysia -Thailand-Laos-China-Kazkhstan and into Europe). Any latest update would be very helpful. Cheers. Ride far ride safe.

If yo have proper visa, why will it be difficult ? Whether you come by air to Delhi or by road to Wagah, it's one and the same thing.

Private taxi, but if this is too pricey for you, there are lots of minibuses plying the route.

Not sure of the exact time (it's something like an hour before dusk). The flag ceremony marks the closing of the border, so if you're crossing, you'll have to watch it from the Pakistani side.
