First things first... the visa requirements of any single country on your list should be on website for the embassy or consulate of that country in your city. So that's your work, to check those out, maybe even call up or visit the embassies and enquire (asking never hurt!).

You might get lucky with an IMer having knowledge of the countries you mention...

Have my doubts that you are going to be able to fly very far on 50000 INR, let alone cover the other expenses of travelling --- but I really hope you find a way to do what you want

Hi Adventurer, I admire your zeal to travel SE Asia!

For Thailand, as an Indian you can get a Visa on arrival, which will allow you to stay in the country for 15 days (do not exceed that limit, you will have to pay 500 Baht for every day of overstay). I'm no sure if you have to show a bank draft to prove your income, but I seriously doubt it - nevertheless, check with the Thai Embassy.

Once in Thailand, it is possible to travel and live fairly cheaply. In Bangkok you can stay in very basic guesthouses for 150 baht/night. Food on the street is the best anyways and will cost you about 50 baht/meal. You can take the train to Chiangmai for less than 1000 baht (12 hour trip).

Don't forget to save 500 baht for the trip back - they won;t let you leave without paying airport tax.

I have neither been to Malaysia nor Singapore, maybe someone else can give you information on those countries. I know from friends that Singapore is quite expensive.

I hope this helps, good luck!

Inr - Thb

btw at today's rate 1 THB = .84 INR

Your 50,000 Rupees are about 42,000 Baht.

I would recommend you make the exchange in India, not here. I know from Indian friends that you don't get a very good rate her (at times 1:2), I believe having to do with the fact that Thai exchange operations do not like to keep Rupees. I'll check the current rate here and get back to you.

Yes food for 50 baht for a decent sized, very delicious dish is no problem. 150 baht guesthouses in Bangkok you can almost only find on Khao San road and they will be far from luxurious.

Going out in Bangkok is great, but not cheap. You can find anything you want, large European-style clubs, Salsa bars, Thai-style clubs (like big fancy beer halls with live Thai music), pool lounges, British and Irish Pubs, cocktail bars, you name it. Best is to go to the small Thai bars with good music, where lots of college students and young professionals go . Some places they let you bring a bottle of whiskey (100 Pipers is 330 baht at 7-Eleven) and you buy mixers and ice.

But it sounds like traveling is your main objective, and that is much cheaper than the nightlife.

Sorry I can't really answer your question, Adventurer_prince.

But I have to say that this 3 month proof of income is the stupidest rule in the world. How many of us would be able to go to India if we needed a statement of the last three months? Of course people will save for a longgg time before a trip. Not everyone funds it on 3 months salary. Thanks to this stupid rule, some people in India who want to visit me may not get in.

you have to understand that as an indian passport holder, single, male with no job, the odds are heavily stacked against you getting a visa to any country to travel individually if you go the embassy or consulate by yourself.

there are many reasons for it, some valid and some not so valid but unfortunately we have to live with it.

there are no visa-free countries for indian nationals except maybe Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh..someone correct me if i am wrong here. and this is likely not going to change in the near and distant future.

having said the above, you can go to countries below that give you visa-on-arrival and please check their websites to verify this information since these change all the time or their requirements do.

Thailand
Cambodia
Laos
Cyprus
Egypt (in the future)
HongKong
Seychelles
Mauritius
Maldives
Sri Lanka
Indonesia[?]

So you could try the visa-on-arrival countries that is if you qualify with the restrictions on those as well. Another suggestion would be to take package tours by companies like Raj...where maybe its more flexible on the visa rules since a tour operator is shepherding you around.

I hear you loud and clear about your wanting to travel, see the world but without having a job, family business or liabilities/responsibilies, you are not giving any assurance to the countries that may view you as a potential migrant.

Dont lose hope that you cant travel at all. Get more money squared away, do your thing for making it, you will get your chances in the future if not now.... And you must travel, see outside lands and go alone if you can..

a ticket to singapore costs you atleast Rs 24,000. If you give the travel agent Rs 10,000 for the visas and stuff. That leaves you with Rs 16,000. And thats not much money for Singapore, Malayasia, Indonesia etc..you might be scraping it for a two-week vacation if you include transportation etc. Maybe Bangladesh and Nepal would be ok.

Rs 10,000 is a lot for a agent charges inclusive of visa charges to those South East Asian countries . I know the Thai visa is Rs 1,200 [$30] or so approx for the visa-on-arrival. So the rest might be the travel agents fees which is a lot..is he planning to send you through a secret route submarine?

You don't even need a visa on arrival in Hong Kong, they just stamp your passport.

The visas sound like a dumb idea if you have to spend 20% of your available cash for them.

I'd say you're best off spending the time in Thailand. There's a lot to see. I've been there three times and I still haven't even seen Chiang Mai. Bum your way down the beaches to the southern border or get stuck on the full moon parties at Koh Phangan which I suspect may be about right for your age group. Just watch your 42,000 baht carefully if you're carrying it around with you.

Patpong is the centre of the naughty nightlife in Bangkok. If you are looking to pick up a Thai hooker or just drink beers while watching them fling ping pong balls across the room in interesting ways it is I am told the place to go.

However, Thailand has a lot more to offer than the sleazy night life. Beaches, cooking classes, great cheap food, massage classes or massages, windsurfing, kitesurfing, scuba and a generally relaxed attitude to life. It would be a shame to go there and get sucked into the sex trade tourism thing.
