Exclamation Upper Mustang

Hi,
I am looking for an Indian companion for atrek to upper Mustand and Muktinath in Nepal.
I would also like to hear from someone( indian) who has been there. I was told Indians don't require permits to trek. Are they allowed to travel independently ( ofcourse with a local guide)? Or it has to be thru a trek agency? What about the on the way accomodation and food? I heard one can get them in the local houses.
please respond if you know anything about it.
best wishes
Raj

Cool Mustang and Muktinath

Muktinath you can do even alone. Its a "tea-house" trek.

Mustang you will require a permit even if you are an Indian. Mustang is not a tea house trek.... you will have to carry everything... which means the official agencies and their charges.

Hi

For upper Mustang's trek, where shall I obtain the permit? In Kathmandu or in Pokhara? And from whom?
Once I get it, can I go on my own? It does n't have to be thru' a trek agency right? I can take a guide/porter and the provisions and proceed, I believe. I was also told by some body from Nepal that Indians can rough it out in the local houses or chai shops for night accomodationa nd food on the way. It's definitely not like a tea house trekking like AC or EBC.
Thanks

If you only want to go to Muktinath then you don't actually have to pass the checkpoint into Upper Mustang at Kagbeni.

To travel further than Kagbeni into Upper Mustang, foreigners have to be part of an organised tour group and pay a fee of US$70 per day.

I'm not sure if Indian Nationals have to pay the fee for entering the ACA (Annapurna Conservation Area) which you would pass through on the way to Muktinath, but if so this can be done in Pokhara.

Do you actually want to visit Upper Mustang?

Yes, I want to go upto LoManthang in Upper Mustang in May/ June this year.
from very authoritative sources and travel magazines I came to know that Indian nationals are not required to pay $700 fee that is levied on other foreigners to visit that place.
I would like to hear from an Indian who has been there and can tell me his trek experiences. About the guide/porter charges, accomodation on the way and the food available etc. I heard from someone in Nepal that Indians are not required to be a part of the group.
just want to confirm...

Last May(in 2005) I tried to go to Upper Mustang(towards Lo Manthang). I went to the Tourism Office in Pokhra and discussed with the Senior-most officer who telephoned at Kathmandu and informed me in writing that Treking permit will be required for the Indians also and Indians have to be part of an organised tour group and pay a fee of US$70 per day.

However still I am interested to go to Upper Mustang. If you have any more information please PM me.

Question Any new information?

Hi Evrybody,

I'm an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India), a title which grants me certain rights such as travel to Sikkim and Bhutan without paying fees. I have been very interested in visiting Mustang and Lo Manthang for a long time. Does anyone have any new information?

Is it possible for Indians to visit without fees?

Thanx,

R.

An OCI is not a full-fledged Indian citizen. Even if Bhutan accepts this for certain purposes, Nepal doesn't.

EDIT: The rules applicable for you wud be determined by your passport.

hi rajiv

Can you please share the info you got regarding the permits for Indian citizens to trek in upper mustang? There are conflicting reports about this matter.
As far as I know, Indian citizens don't have to pay any special fee to visit any part of Nepal unless it's a nature sanctuary.
Yes, some sensitive areas along the Tibetan border may be restricted. That applies to Nepalis as well. Nepali citizens can visit any part of India without paying a fee/passport.
That is what the Sugauli treaty between India and Nepal says.

Infact Non Indian foreigers have to pay special fee to visit Dolpo, Manaslu and other areas apart from Mustang.
Hope you will clarify.
