Tsunami News - Arugam Bay - Sri Lanka - Donations

I had so many friends in Arugam Bay. Some are dead, some alive, fleed in camps and need our help. There are stories of survivers and missing people. Roads, bridges, villages are destroyed, hundreds of fisher men are missed. Find here all news around Sri Lankan east-coast Arugam Bay, Kalmunai, Okanda, Panama and other villages around Pottuvil.

Please use this site to find your people and tell us all news you have.

Here some actual english news from Wolfgang who spoke with Fred from the Siam View Hotel:

I just talk to Fred again. There is help neccesarry but please do not send anything else than money because of corruption and missing organisation it will not reach the place. Everything need is possible to buy at the island. So money is the best way to help. For further informations contact Wolfgang. For further informations call me: (00)49-(0) 69-98192631 (Germany)

There are no connections to Arugam Bay because the bridge is damaged.

Bank connection to Fred:

Deutsche Bank PGK AG Mönchengladbach (Germany)

A foreighn surviver story from Arugam Bay:

Berkus said he and a friend were sleeping in a beachfront cottage at Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka's eastern coast when he heard a loud noise and the roof was ripped off.

Berkus, 33, said they were swept into the sea along with debris, animals and other people. The two grabbed a telephone pole, he said, but lost their grips when a second large wave hit. Berkus told CNN that he climbed onto the roof of a home; his friend was missing.

Berkus said he and about 50 other survivors -- tourists and locals -- spent the rest of the night in a field, but were without water and food. Many of the group were injured, including a pregnant woman who had broken ribs, he said.

Members of the Sri Lankan army had taken a few of the injured away in helicopters, he said, and told the rest of the group that other helicopters would arrive at sunrise. "It's just been utter devastation. Bodies everywhere," Berkus said. "I'm very scraped up, but luckily I'm OK ... against that kind of force of nature, there was nothing any of us could do."

Berkus said that lost everything he had with him. "I'm sitting here with nothing -- no passport, no money, no anything, in shorts that somebody gave me ... the bottom line is, we desperately need help here."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just got a call from Haputale and Pottuvil. A man spoke with Fred from SVH. Only small parts of the Hotel are left. He don´t like to leave the people alone. Chuti´s family shall be alive but some members are missed. They have fleed to a camp near Lagugala about 10 km west from Pottuvil. I have send a friend from Haputale to find and help him and take his kids in his home.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the last weeks some people asked me where to stay around Haputale. Please note that I spoke today with the owner of the White Monkey Dias Rest to go to Lahugala Camp, find our friends who got victims of the tsunami wave and accomodate them for the next weeks. Special the children need help while the parents have to rebuild everything. Please find your accomodation somewhere else in the town of Haputale. Thanks for your understanding.

Find here (fast internet) some 130 photos from all around the island or there for slow internet.

Tsunami - Arugam Bay - Sri Lanka - 50% as donation from all my eBay auctions

[b]Tsunami - Arugam Bay - Sri Lanka - 50% as donation from all my eBay adams-peak auctions (Indian/Sri Lankan articles only)

I´m going in January/February to Colombo to overhand privat donations to SUROL and futher I´m going on to Arugam Bay to give indiviuell help to the local victims according there needs.

Our german parish has 25 god-children with SUROL organisation helping people having leprosy. This days we lost contact with Father Glen Fernando from the SUROL office. A rain cannel is next by. Possible they got floaded. We think in this time he´s having lot of problems to contact and help the 500 supported families which are living all over the country. We are planning to collect for them at the New Year Mass as well as we think about a special account for the Arugam Bay seaquake victims and for all SUROL patients.

Meanwhile, I decided to give 50% from all my running ebay auctions (Indian/Sri Lankan articles) as adams-peak to support the people in Arugam Bay. Today I arranged with my company an off-time for three month and I will start to Sri Lanka within the next 3 weeks after having a ticket.

Local friends of Haputale have the idea to collect needful things from neighbour villages and shops and transport them to Arugam Bay. All they need are some vans to hire and I think to finance that.

Please have a look for my auctions. I guarantee to give 100% of the total donations to the seaquake victions. I think all my 785 positive feedbacks speak their own language.

Later here I will give account informations from our parrish.

Thanks for your time and help,
Oliver

Bitte schaut in meine Auktionen.

Oliver

There are only two more days I´m going to Colombo and Arugam Bay. Still we need a lot of help to realize our projects. Meanwhile we got 8500 Euro for Surol and 1350 Euro for the orphanage but we need 10.000 Euro only for the first year of the orphanage and than 4000 Euro every year. That would be enough help for my friends Dias and Fareena to take care for 6 orphan children and their own 5 children. Some people asked me to take care for them and I will offer that when the house starts running.

Tsunami Wave shocked Sri Lanka!
****** We like to help! ******
You too? – Each Euro can save a life!

„ ... it was the morning of the second christmas day we went with our children to the beach when the first wave came close to the wall of our cabana. We went back just to have a look for our bags when the next waves came, bigger, faster and even more powerful. The muddy floods took us far inside the land but we had good luck. All our family survived but the danish hotel owner Per G. and four of his workers died in the waves.“ (free translation by surviver report).

Wounded people and survivers had to stay next night in the fields, on trees or on one of the less roofs around. Debris, bodies and fearful, distracted animals around them. Spooky was the night, fearful every sound of a wave and shocking the next morning. Than helicopters came to rescue them.

In spite of all the problems the locals had by themselve they did not hesitate to help the foreighners, gave them food and dresses and helped them to find lost family members. For this kindness we like to give something back.

This appeal for donations happens in the name of the north german chatolic parrish St. Konrad and the german Oliver Eichelberg (KWS PZE Kiel) who knows the area of Arugam Bay since 13 years. St. Konrad works together with the Sri Lankan organisation SUROL in Colombo (Society for Uplift and Rehabilitation of Leprosy Patients). The only one in Sri Lanka giving help to leprosy patients. Giving help to all this people SUROL never ask for their religions. Help is for everybody. Last 25 years St. Konrad had good experiences with SUROL and lot of our godchilds took a better way.

All donations for SUROL will be used for school buildings, god-childs, toilets, wells, new houses for leporsy patients, and to help them to build new existences like with a sewing machine, typewriter, bicycles, seeds or a cow so that they can earn enough for their standard of living. Now lot of this people lost their proberty and need our help in this days.

Oliver and his local friend W.S.M. Dias from Haputale (Thotulagala) like to manage some transports to Arugam Bay where they need help and workers to rebuild all houses. Giving help depends from the needs of the local authorities and victims of the Tsunami wave. Also Dias wife Fareena had the wish to help orphan children. Fareena would like to integrate up to 6 children in her family as a care holder. Herself she´s a lovely mother of four boys and a girl. For this project we need to build a house with four rooms and bathroom. Ground is available. All children will get same good treatment, dresses, food, school help and medicine. To concrete this idea we need to talk with the locals. Incase there are to many problems, donations for this project would be given back to SUROL or Arugam Bay.

Oliver worked 1991/2 for some months as teacher in Ulla – Arugam Bay. He wrote some newspaper articles about the negative war effects to this school and asked the Sri Lankans to donate for the schools at the eastcoast. From the Asia Foundation he got lot of books for the school library. Since 1999 Oliver had a god-child from SUROL. Oliver walked all around the island, the mountains, jungle, riverbanks and saw wild elephants in the plains of Sri Lanka. In this time he got a lot of interesting inspirations from Muslims, Veddhas, Tamils, Christians and Singhaleses and knows how to speak with the people.

Who ever likes to donate for the Sri Lankan victims of the Tsunami wave please feel welcome to transfer to the official donation account of our parrish:

Oliver flies end of January to Sri Lanka to meet Father Glen Fernando, general secretary of SUROL. Further on Oliver will visit some areas effected by the waves and help there to coordinate the measures. Oliver will personal control the practical use of the donations.

Please understand that Oliver has less time before departure and there are no or less possibilities for internet between Haputale and Arugam Bay to answer you questions but time by time he will add some news at his homepage. We hope, meanwhile that Fred from the Siam View Hotel in Arugam Bay could reinstall his internet. After Olivers return to Germany there will be detailled story with photos and facts.

The donation flood found an end!

6 weeks ago I came to Sri Lanka and went with a truck full of volunteers and 250 kg vegetables to the eastcoast to help the people of Arugam Bay and Tirrukkuvil. The help was welcome but not enough.

Exspecting more help for an orphanage we started to prepare a ground for the building on my risk. But the total of 60 Euro for the orphans and 700 Euro for SUROL Colombo (Leprosy help) only made us to change our program. Surol got all it's money directly. The 60 Euro are gone for another tour and the ground will be used for privat needs of the family who wished to take care for 6 orphans.

I'm sad we couldn't do more but thanks to all the travellers like me who gave much faster help with their small programs than all the big organisations who came and left and talked and waisted time only.

More news will follow after my return.
