Tribal tourism in Myanmar's Nagaland

Can we do the same thing in Indian Nagaland *without* paying "hundreds of dollars a night"?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070128...07012822493 8
The members of the Naga tribes living in Myanmar are among the most isolated people in the world. But for a handful of intrepid travellers, their villages have become an alluring if unlikely tourist attraction.

The 100,000 Nagas in Myanmar have little contact with the outside world, and even with the 1.2 million Nagas living across the border in India.....

But over the last 10 years, the Nagas have begun using their new year ceremony to receive small groups of well-heeled tourists who are willing to pay hundreds of dollars a night to sleep in a dirt-floored hut for the chance to have an authentic tribal experience.

Wow. Here's me running to build a hut.

What return on investment!

It seems there really is one born every minute.

How much of the"100s of dollars" do you think the tribals are actually receiving? ;-( and if they do, will they then run out and buy VCRS and destroy their culture?

I'd imagine most of the money goes to the Myanmar government, which doesn't make this a very appealing excursion to me.........

One thing is for sure tribals will not get anything from "100's of dollars", on the other hand its quite sure that slowly they will start losing there culture ..and the daily routines..

you needed govt permission to get up there when I visited in 2006. Usually in Myanmar that means paying them for everything

One of the Lamas said the meeting Nagas was a starnge experience for him. It was the first time he saw people with no emotion in their eyes. And according to rumors, they killed people to get their good karmas. The meeting happened in the late 60's.
On the other hand there is a Hungarian crime writer, who's favorite topic is Nagas, who are his best mystic friends. I really love his nonsense works. "The Hare Krishna murders" :-)))
It might be interesting to see those Nagas
