to just rock up at borders and get entry visas there
I have been wishing for the possibility of all countries allowing VOAs these days. May be for a couple of months than just 7 days, 30 days. How easy and relaxing traveling wud be.

Hmmm, go west, eh, now there's an idea, that I'd Atlanticocentrically missed before. Would be quite the book (and the movie, and the documentary series, and the extended game version) no doubt.

And I would love to read stories on that route. Any takers?
May be if I save some money now and retire early I would love to go for it. May be I should! . I think one year would be enough to have a enjoyable journey soaking the beauty of every place on the way.

OK, this is not the usual trip but it's still fun to read about.

http://www.jimrogers.com/ Click on "The Route" and "The Adventure" on top for starters.

This very, very, very wealthy American investor, who clearly loves traveling, took a 3 year (millinium) round the world trip with his custom made little Mercedes which pulled a little custom trailer like some motorcyles use (he also loves motorcycles and did another gigantic almost around the world trip on one--wrote a book called "Investment Biker" about it. I read it and really liked the book.)

Anyway, if you have tons of money and tons of imagination, here's a way to do it. It really was an astounding adventure. I don't know of another very wealthy person who would do this over an around-the-world trip on the QE 2. GO JIM. I think he got married and settled down in Singapore recently. He's 65.

Paris France I was thinking of really though perhaps leaving closer to home here at a Jersey Shore Beach and then going to the beach in France would be kind of interesting. I think I would have to ship the car up there near the Bearing Strait, stay with it on the boat for a few days. Not sure how long that would be. Maybe we could get a hybrid car company to sponsor it so we could promote it's long running ability or something. And they could then supply emergency parts etc should it be required in remote locations. I imagine getting fuel in Siberia area could be challenging, though with Wikimapia it might be possible to see what towns are really out there and what road we could find. Perhaps.

I figured if I ever did it I would need sponsorship somehow. Its either that or some other over land form or transportation like bicycle, but that would take even longer and I am not sure my 3 and 6 year old would really be able to cycle that far : ). However easier to get parts in Siberia I assume.

The Jim Rogers adventures look pretty interesting to read though clearly he has more funds then I so what can I say. Maybe if I could find a hybrid mini-van and take may family in it we could make a car commercial to boost sales of the hybrid mini-van that I cannot yet locate to buy.

And of course after reading all this I realize that our tiny little 3 week trip to India is great but just the beginning. Maybe my husband can do a sabatical there. I think we will need more time or more trips. My kids will be the ones who never quite got to Disney but got a hundred other more remote locations. Years of therapy perhaps required. Hee hee hee.

Quite the adventure, yes. Hey, go for it! Friends of mine cycled around Siberia. What can I say, freezing in winter like you'd imagine; what fewer people seem to realize (I didn't) swampy and scorching hot and mosquito-infested in summer.

From the daydreaming dept., how's about Netherlands Antilles-Venezuela-short sidetrip (ferry) to Trinidad-overlanding to San Francisco. Used to be tricky parts of the way, but well or at least sort of doable today I reckon. I'll let you know if it ever happens.

btw That Rogers route doesn't look too bad no; I knew I should have become a millionaire

It's possible to accomplish trips like that without the millionaire status .The biggest thing you have to overcome is that comfortable chair and routine .All is possible .

In Tehran I met a German couple who had travelled overland from Bangkok, through Laos, China, Kyrygzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in a Tuk-Tuk!!!. They were posing for photos with all the locals, and on their way to Cairo...

About overland traveling just recently an idea struck to hitchhike from one tip of a country to the other. Of course I can cycle but hitchhiking for free wud add some adventure to it. (of course saving monkey wud not be the intention but I wud simply try not to buy any ticket from anywhere... just some kind tip to the one who gives me a lift). Been thinking of this idea... I just have to chose a country and hit the roads with my thumbs ready to ask for lifts by the roadsides. Wow!
That sounds like so much fun. And a good idea too. The saftey aspect would be a worry ofcourse.

Yes, for solo girls! But not to ignore that aspect. A good study before setting off and general precautions while traveling have to be in place for any traveler(boy/girl)

EDIT:
And here is an Australian on a different route and mode of transport. Aaha! Mangolia. I love that place, tho never been there.

And here is Tim's homepage. For reasons of my own I awe such travelers than that millionaire who simply drove his car. I would never travel around on my own motorized thing thereby adding to the pollution(except air travel where it's inevitable) and will never be impressed by ppl doing motorbike and car trips around the world. I know my vehicle won't add much even if I do but that's just not my style.

And boy, Tim has a lot ..a lot of sponsors, yeah!

I'll be going about half-way this summer - I've just booked my train tickets from Dublin to Istanbul, and from there I'm heading to Georgia, Armenia and Iran. Won't be going any further than that this time though.
