as an indian, i guess its pretty much impossible to get onto the KKH right? because it passes through PoK and other sensitive areas? Would love a trip through KKH to Kashgar to the stans.

I really don't know about regulations for Indians up there. Certainly there are checkpoints where you cross into Gilgit-Baltistan (PoK) and in other places where your passport is checked and you have to register you details. Would be a shame if Indians were denied access, it's one of my favourite places in the world.

Just to note, with Nadreg's help I've updated and expanded the OP to reflect the ever-changing visa and security issues relating to the trip, and to include extra links and information. If anyone has done the trip in the last two years, or visited Pakistan in that time, your thoughts would be most welcome.

I have just completed this journey, travelling alone on a motorcycle.
Visa's required patience and determination. But finally I got them prior to setting out.
34 days. 7800 miles.
No major dramas. Iran was lovely. Pakistan a little more difficult .
Most dangerous thing... other road users in Pakistan and India.

Just discovered there's a ferry running from Iskenderun (formely Alexandretta) in the Hatay province of Turkey to Port Said in Egypt, allowing travelers to bypass Syria. If the Cyrpus-Israel ferry is ever restarted, these should provide a nice alternative way to get around the Middle East as a side-trip on your way to India.

Of course, after all these years I'm still waiting to here reliable info on regular passenger ferries between the Gulf and India which would bypass Pakistan.

WOW. I am mad impressed. $100 a week, esp in Europe. That is just mind-blowing on top of not flying at all... What a master.
