It was really great, we spent 8 days in Cairo in total, and with Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, it was pretty special, definitely one of my favorite mega-cities that I've been. It very much reminded me of Delhi actually.

Events in Pakistan and pleas from loved ones have led me to a change of plans. I`ve just booked a flight from Tehran to Kathmandu for next month. Will spend at least a month in Nepal a country I never considered visiting until 2 nights ago.

So a bit of cheating, but I`m verz happy about it.

You will love Kathmandu and also be sure and go to Pokhara. They have a little shop that is owned by a Kashmiri, his name is Mack. And his long time girl friend was killed on the autobaun. She was German and we were all good friends.
Also in the center of town there is a Kashmiri shop run by a Kashmiri as well the area is called Dunbar. Go and say hello for me.
Sincerely, Gypsie
Don't forget to go and climb the stairs to the Temple that is a little ways out of town. I and my friend went all over Kathmandu on a motocycle, we really got to see all of the area.It has been several years now and I cannot remember his name.

You will like Nepal alot. Until the Maoists took over & threw the country into chaos & the Royal family went crazy, it was my favorite country in the world. Hope to get back there on next Asia trip.

The Kathmandu valley has many interesting towns for day trips (Bhaktapur, Patan, Bodinath, etc.) and even overnight to a lovely Newari town called Dulikel (not spelled right--about 1 to 2 hours from Kathmandu depending on transportation).

I've been to Pokara a few times but I wouldn't go there unless I was planning on trekking from there. It is lovely & on a lake but something unpleasant has happened to the local young people who started emulating the foreign trekkers boozing & drug habits. Just my opinion. I was there a long time ago.

Tell us what you think, since this was an unplanned stop!

Good idea to skip Pak right now. It really is too dangerous in every city!

Travelling back to Europe from India...

Hello! I'd planned to travel India to Pakistan, Iran, Turkey...but it doesn't look possible what with the situation I'm reading about in Pakistan. Does anyone have any other suggestions for overland travel back? I came Russia, China, Nepal so don't really want to retrace my steps. Don't want to have to fly...

THanks!

Michelle

They are the only 2 overland routes from India, so if you're dead set against both of them, you're going to have to fly. Try getting a cheap flight to the Gulf, you can ferry it from there to Iran.

A thought btw, I believe the British government has had a travel advisory out for some time against travel to Pakistan for its citizens.

So Brits might want to check the fine print of their health and other travel insurances when planning to go there; it could mean you won't be covered. I know that checking a while ago this would seem to be the reason why UK organized travel companies (or overlanding ones, at least) are currently not going there; simply because they can't insure such tours. Not sure how it would affect individual travelers, but it's something to look into. Would apply to any other nationals with such advisories out, of course.

Still in Iran. Will be in Kathmandu on the 18th. Iran is a bit different to how I remembered it. Maybe it's the cold weather. Anyway, I'm heading south to the Persian Gulf on a train tonight, where it's 35 degrees, can't wait.

For what it's worth, I just met a guy here in Tehran (Canadian) who traveled here from Pakistan with no problems.
