Question Travel advice sought for journey between Calcutta and Kathmandu

I am planning to do a trek to Everest base camp in November. The expedition will start in Kathmandu. I would like to travel to Calcutta and make the most of the journey to Kathmandu. I will probably have about 2-3 weeks to reach Kathmandu. Does anyone have an advice on the following;
1. Where is good to visit between Calcutta and Nepal?
2. Can you just cross the border anywhere? I've heard that there are limited crossing points.
3. What's Calcutta itself like?
4. Anyone done the Everest base camp trek? Is it tough?

Any help greatly appreciated

Jamie

Calcutta is a wonderful city -- my favorite in India.

You will probably be taking a bus, since there are no trains to anywhere in Nepal. You can't just "cross the border" anywhere; there are places where you can get transportation onward into Nepal and those are where you'll cross.

When I used to go to Nepal, I used to cross at Roxaul (in Bihar, not too far from Patna). I don't know if that crossing is still there.

Or, you can fly.

u can go from calcutta to New jalpaiguri by train from there u can catch a bus or a taxi to the nepal border , then there are local buses to take u upto kathmandu or u can also fly from there .besides that what u can also do is go from New jalpaiguri to Darkjeeling 3 hrs drive by car or 7 to 8 hrs by toy train , look around before coming to New jalpaiguri and going on to nepal border.
