Transit through Karachi

We, a family of four with US passport, have a 12 hour transit at Karachi on our way home to Houston. Airline (PIA) is giving us a hotel near the airport. Would they let us tour the city, or are we confined to the hotel for that time? Don't really want to spend the 120 bucks a pop for visas.

Depending on what time of day/night you arrive in Karachi, you may not have time to do much other than to stay in the hotel. We did this several years ago (though on the way home from Lahore, so no visa problems) and it took so long to get baggage, get to the hotel, checked in, get actual electricity (load shedding was a problem) etc. that it was dark and we were too tired to worry about going anywhere! Be glad they at least offered you a hotel!

By the way, if you want to be offered the curry rather than the bland "American" food on the PIA flight, wear your shalawar kameez on the flight! On the way to Pakistan, we wore western clothes and were given the nasty "American" food, but in our shalwars on the way home, they offered us curry. Pakistanis were automatically given the good stuff! (Needless to say, PIA is not my favorite airline!)
