I was interested in dayglowhamster's earlier coments on the local sentiments of tourists going to Sri Lanka at the moment..
I would be intersted in the wider consensus... What is the generally felt to be right ? I am currently in Varkala / Kerala and have a flight booked on Jan 15th for 2 weeks. In truth, I hadn't really planned to go to may coastal areas anyway, but at the same time don't want to be a 'macho' tourist and continue on over, possibly staying around Kandy / Colombo. I actually feel uneasy about going and in truth would like someone to talk me OUT of going... How much of this '... we need tourists to keep coming' stuff is really true ? Is the mood really appropriate or would my airfare be better donated to a fund ? Coments would be most welcome. PS I know this is an India forum, but SL just seems to be relavant at the moment. bb |

No advice here but we're also in a similar situation. Had planned on going to inland Sri Lanka but feel uneasy about it now. I think it could also be very depressing to be in such a traumatised country at the moment. On the other hand I agree that Sri Lanka desperately needs the tourist dollars/euros, but would it be better to leave it for a few months?

No way to get away from the pall of gloom and grief in Tsunami hit regions I would imagine.
I would definitely NOT go if I didn't want to. Read your own post for your answer, butterball.

Visit Sri Lanka
Hi ButterBall,
if your are not interested in the sea, then you need not change your mind about going to sri lanka, because rest of the country (Historic places and Hill country) is ready to welcome you. You need not over stay at Kandy since there are other places like Sigiriya, Habarana, Polonnaruwa, Nuwara eliya and many more. Only beach resorts are in bad shape, and in case you are looking for a sun bath, still there are few places re opened ar several places in Gall and Matara, but getting there is difficult due to damaged roads. I don't recomend sea side, but rest of the country is ready as ever. |
