Tsunami Wave shocked Sri Lanka!

[size=3]„ ... it was the morning of the second christmas day we went with our children to the beach when the first wave came close to the wall of our cabana. We went back just to have a look for our bags when the next waves came, bigger, faster and even more powerful. The muddy floods took us far inside the land but we had good luck. All our family survived but the danish hotel owner Per G. and four of his workers died in the waves.“ (free translation by surviver report).

Wounded people and survivers had to stay next night in the fields, on trees or on one of the less roofs around. Debris, bodies and fearful, distracted animals around them. Spooky was the night, fearful every sound of a wave and shocking the next morning. Than helicopters came to rescue them.

In spite of all the problems the locals had by themselve they did not hesitate to help the foreighners, gave them food and dresses and helped them to find lost family members. For this kindness we like to give something back.

This appeal for donations happens in the name of the north german chatolic parrish St. Konrad and the german Oliver (KWS PZE Kiel) who knows the area of Arugam Bay since 13 years. St. Konrad works together with the Sri Lankan organisation SUROL in Colombo (Society for Uplift and Rehabilitation of Leprosy Patients). The only one in Sri Lanka giving help to leprosy patients. Giving help to all this people SUROL never ask for their religions. Help is for everybody. Last 25 years St. Konrad had good experiences with SUROL and lot of our godchilds took a better way.

All donations for SUROL will be used for school buildings, god-childs, toilets, wells, new houses for leporsy patients, and to help them to build new existences like with a sewing machine, typewriter, bicycles, seeds or a cow so that they can earn enough for their standard of living. Now lot of this people lost their proberty and need our help in this days.

Oliver and his local friend W.S.M. Dias from Haputale (Thotulagala) like to manage some transports to Arugam Bay where they need help and workers to rebuild all houses. Giving help depends from the needs of the local authorities and victims of the Tsunami wave. Also Dias wife Fareena had the wish to help orphan children. Fareena would like to integrate up to 6 children in her family as a care holder. Herself she´s a lovely mother of four boys and a girl. For this project we need to build a house with four rooms and bathroom. Ground is available. All children will get same good treatment, dresses, food, school help and medicine. To concrete this idea we need to talk with the locals. Incase there are to many problems, donations for this project would be given back to SUROL or Arugam Bay.

Oliver worked 1991/2 for some months as teacher in Ulla – Arugam Bay. He wrote some newspaper articles about the negative war effects to this school and asked the Sri Lankans to donate for the schools at the eastcoast. From the Asia Foundation he got lot of books for the school library. Since 1999 Oliver had a god-child from SUROL. Oliver walked all around the island, the mountains, jungle, riverbanks and saw wild elephants in the plains of Sri Lanka. In this time he got a lot of interesting inspirations from Muslims, Veddhas, Tamils, Christians and Singhaleses and knows how to speak with the people.

For donations more than 100 Euro the parrish can send you a receipt incase they get your full adress too.

Oliver flies end of January to Sri Lanka to meet Father Glen Fernando, general secretary of SUROL. Further on Oliver will visit some areas effected by the waves and help there to coordinate the measures. Oliver will personal control the practical use of the donations.

Please understand that Oliver has less time before departure and there are no or less possibilities for internet between Haputale and Arugam Bay to answer you questions but time by time he will add some news at his homepage. We hope, meanwhile that Fred from the Siam View Hotel in Arugam Bay could reinstall his internet. After Olivers return to Germany there will be detailled story with photos and facts.

„ ... am Morgen des 26.12.2004 waren wir mit unseren Kindern am Strand, als die erste Welle kam und bis zum Zaun unserer Cabana reichte. Eigentlich wollten wir nur mal nach unserem Gepäck sehen, jedoch waren die nächsten Wellen viel größer, schneller und kräftiger, rissen uns fort und wir trieben weit hinein ins Hinterland. Unsere Familie hat überlebt, aber der dänische Hotelier Per G. und vier seiner Angestellten starben.“

Verwundete und Überlebende verbrachten die Nacht in den Feldern, auf Bäumen oder retteten sich auf die verbliebenen Dächer. Trümmer, Tiere und Leichen schwammen überall. Gespenstisch war die Nacht, jeder Wellenschlag schürte neue Ängste. Erschütternd war das Grauen in den frühen Morgenstunden. Erleichterung überkam sie erst, als sie von Helikoptern gerettet wurden.

Trotz eigener Verluste, Sorgen und Qualen kümmerten sich die Einheimischen auch um die Touristen, gaben ihnen Kleidung und Nahrung und halfen Familien wieder zueinander zu finden. Dafür wollen wir uns nun bedanken und ihnen helfen, ein neues Leben zu beginnen.

Dieser Spendenaufruf erfolgt durch das Katholische Pfarramt St. Konrad in Nortorf und Oliver Eichelberg (KWS-PZE Kiel) zu Gunsten der Hilfsorganisation SUROL (Gesellschaft zur Unterstützung und Rehabilitation von Leprakranken) in Colombo Sri Lanka. Ohne Rücksicht auf Konfession und Stand hilft Sie den Menschen im ganzen Land. St. Konrad blickt zurück auf 25 Jahre gute Zusammenarbeit und der erfolgreichen Förderung vieler Patenkinder.

Diese Spenden werden für Schulgebäude, Patenschaften, sanitäre Anlagen, Brunnen, neue Häuser für die Leprakranken und zur Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe verwendet, wie der Kauf von Näh- und Schreibmaschinen, Fahrräder, Saatgut oder einer Kuh, damit die Menschen ihren Lebensunterhalt wieder selbst verdienen können. Viele dieser Menschen stehen jetzt wieder vor dem Nichts und sind in diesen Tagen besonders auf unsere Spenden angewiesen.

Des weiteren möchte Oliver in eigener Regie und mit Unterstützung seines einheimischen Freundes W.S.M. Dias von Haputale (Thotulagala) einen Hilfstransport zur Ostküste organisieren und in Absprache mit den lokalen Behörden und Überlebenden, der Bevölkerung beim Wiederaufbau helfen. Dias Frau Fareena hat den Wunsch geäußert, Waisenkindern zu helfen. Sie ist bereit, bis zu 6 Kinder in ihre Familie zu intergrieren. Fareena, selbst liebevolle Mutter, hat bereits vier Jungen und ein Mädchen. Für dieses Projekt muß ergänzender Wohnraum, 4 Zimmer, ein Bad und eine größere Küche geschaffen werden. Ein passendes Grundstück steht dafür zur Verfügung. Alle Kinder erhalten gleich gute Fürsorge, Nahrung, Kleidung, Schulmittel und medizinische Versorgung. Diese Idee muß vor Ort noch genauer besprochen werden. Nur im Falle, dass es unüberwindbare, rechtliche Probleme in der Gestaltung dieses Projektes gibt, werden die hierfür gespendeten Gelder anderen Projekten, Arugam Bay und Surol, zugeführt.

Oliver hat 1991/2 mehrere Monate als Aushilfslehrer einer Dorfschule in Ulla - Arugam Bay (Ostküste) gearbeitet, dort mit Zeitungsberichten während des Bürgerkrieges auf die Nöte der Schule aufmerksam gemacht und erhielt von der Asia Foundation gespendete Schulbücher. Oliver hat durch SUROL seit 1999 ein Patenkind. Er wanderte über Gebirge, folgte den Flußläufen durch die Dschungel und begegnete wilden Elefanten in den Ebenen Sri Lankas. Dabei sammelte er viele, interessante Erfahrungen mit Moslems, Veddhas, Tamilen, Christen und Singhalesen, die ihm heute den Umgang mit der Bevölkerung erleichtern.

Wer also für die Flutopfer in Asien spenden möchte, kann dies direkt über die Kirchengemeinde veranlassen:

Die Buchungsbestätigung bis zu 100 € Spende ist gleichzeitig Zuwendungsnachweis für das Finanzamt. Es müssen Name und Kontonummer des Auftraggebers und Empfängers, der Betrag, sowie der Buchungstag ersichtlich sein. Für die Spenden darüber hinaus stellt die Kirchengemeinde gerne einen Zuwendungsnachweis aus.

Oliver fliegt Ende Januar für 3 Monate nach Sri Lanka und trifft sich dort mit Pater Glen Fernando, dem Generalsekretär von SUROL. Weiter wird er die Unglücksgebiete besuchen und dort bei weiteren Maßnahmen behilflich sein. Die zweckgebundene Verwendung der gespendeten Gelder für Arugam Bay wird von ihm persönlich überwacht.

In my Oppinion, Government Fund at the Central bank would be a better place for any contribution. It will ensure a just and fair help to all the country, where help is needed most.

In my opinion I don´t know what this Government Fund is doing. Still, after 4 weeks, there are broken bridges around Arugam Bay. No water. No electricity. Not enough food and building materials 40% up. Where´s your government?

I´m going to Colombo day after tomorrow and my help will come immediately. Food for the poor, homes for the orphans and maybe a kick for somebody who´s lazy to repair this most needful bridges that all help can pass faster.

After tsunami there around 200 new NGOs has been registered in Sri Lanka, and some more uregistered organisations found collecting dinations for varias institutions. Some were found to be genuine but some were not. this web site is the official web site for donations though the goverment and other government approved NGOs like red cross and Sravodaya.

Sri Lanka is a samll country, most of the southern and Eastern beach ( more than half of the coastal line) is dstroyed and it'll take some time to restore the whole area back to normal.
At this sudden disater number 1 priority has been food, medicine and immediate shelter. At the moment there is enought food and medicine to feed the effected areas for few weeks.(will nedd more next month) Thanks to local and foreign health terams we managed to escape diaria and other diseases.
Now thw next step is to re build the housed and infrastructure. Tempary bridges ahs been built already connecting main roads, so that trucks and jeeps can be taken to effected areas.
Our govermnet may be in efiicient and this task may be too big..and it'll take some time before they get into the most efficient track, but still we have faith in us, because after all it's the government who take long term measures to re build the country and take care of the displaced community as a whole , not NGOs, or Charity Organisations.
