SL in August, worth it?

Hi everyone,

I was planning to tour India for about three weeks at the end of July and beginning of August. I have a friend who told me that i simply must visit SL (he's a local). Would it be worth giving up one of three weeks in India to see the country? I would probably be cutting out some time that would have been spent in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and/or Goa. Thoughts?

Also, whats the weather like that time of year? Monsoon season in full swing?

SL (Sri Lanka) is best in winter months. We spent a month (Feb) there last year.

3 weeks is not alot of time for India to see the places you've chosen. So I would say not to give up one week to include SL but consider it as a separate trip or as part of a longer India trip at another time.

You can visit anywhere quickly but I don't recommend it. SL does not have the tourist infrastructure that India has, probably because of 25 years of civil war and not many tourists. There are a few trains but the majority of people hire car & driver to go everywhere outside of Colombo. There are two prices for everything. I don't mean they try to overcharge you, I mean there are two actual prices, one for tourists and one for locals. This is unfortunate but the way it goes. There's lots to see the people are wonderful and desperate for tourists who once again have mostly stopped coming due to an upsurge in fighting and suicide bombers in Colombo again.
