short trip out of India - what to do with ruppees

As you are not supposed to take ruppees out of the country should I take care not to have any when we go to the Maldives for a few days? Or do they not really check and can I safely hang on to the ruppees for use later?

You can hang onto them. It's no big deal. You're not likely to be charged for trafficking in currency. I save small amounts of rupees for upcoming trips.
