Short stay at Bangkok Hi, can anyone tell me what the major attractions in and around Bangkok are? How much of it can be done during a two-night/three day stay? Other than hotel charges what is the expenditure likely to be? Is there any low priced local store where one can get Benjarong pottery?

The Royal Palace is worth a look as is Wat Phra Kaew(Temple of the Emerald Buddha)nearby.A day trip to Ayuttahya is possible. A day at the beach in Cha-am or Pattaya perhaps.

Thanks a lot. Pattaya may not be possible. Will try to make the most of the nearby attractions. Any other ideas? Are these trips expensive?

| I reckon you'd be far better off checking some sites for Thai travel; find a good bunch of them collected in this post by Steve: ThailandMike? I don't have much to add; I found Bangkok like most such mega-cities pretty overpowering and disorienting at first, wouldn't count on getting too much done over a first few days. But, maybe others are more intrepid I suppose any guidebook of your choice should list the things to see and do there; just count on, as again with any travel to anywhere or at least in my experience, most of your excursions taking much more time and energy than it may look like on paper (oh, that doesn't look very far! But then it always is not knowing your way around and such.)btw I found costs in Thailand not much (but certainly a little) higher than say a decent budget level in India -- which is conveniently vague and so not telling you much however, and besides this was later 1990's. No idea about today. I also wasn't hanging out in any super-touristy areas. Bangkok itself and like any big city will be likely to cost you more than it might elsewhere I suppose.

Thanks for the link. Really helpful. I too am not for touristy places but one cannnot avoid that in Bangkok I suppose, especialy on a 2/3 night trip. Maybe a longer stay would allow one to see more of the less visited but worth visiting places in Thailand. I am looking forward to make the best of the time available and spend the least/nothing on shopping. Guide books are helpful I suppose but its always better to get first hand information.
