Hi All.
I need to get myself to Kathmandu in 5 days from Rishikesh. I am having a difficult time finding any info about this trip. I would like to go cheap of course.

Any suggestions?

Dear szymiec,
The trains 5652 (Weekly/Thursdays), 5654 (Weekly/Saturday), 2588 (Weekly/Sunday), 5098 (Weekly/Wednesday) depart from Laksar at 7.48 hrs. (**on the days shown)and arrive in Gorakhpur at 21.35 hrs.
==========
Just purchase a Waitlist Ticket in anyone of the above trains and manage in the train, since it is a day-journey.
==========
Moreover, normal practice is that Kathmandu-bound passengers reach Gorakhpur at night, stay there and take next day morning bus for Kathmandu.
=============
Or else, you may also take 5006 Dehradun-Gorakhpur (Bi-weekly/ TUE/THU) (or) 5002 Dehradun-Muzaffarpur (Weekly/SAT) which depart from Dehradun at 15.25 hrs. and reach Gorakhpur at 8.00 hrs. next day.
=============
From Gorakhpur, you have to travel by Bus for a duration of two hours to reach Indian border; cross the Indian Border; enter Nepal territory and take the Bus to Kathmandu.

Bus Wallah

You are either on the bus or off the bus! The fastest way to overland from Rishikesh to Kathmandu would be to go by taxi. The cost probably will be prohibitive. Long-haul taxi hires from Rishikesh and Haridwar are expensive. The quickest fall back plan is to take an unreserved bus. There should be a bus departure about once an hour. The first bus will get you to Lucknow, the second to Gorakpur, the third to Sonauli (the India/Nepal border), and the fourth to Kathmandu. In June 2000 I traveled this route substituting a taxi for the bus on the first leg to Lucknow. The taxifare was significantly higher per kilometer than for a taxi hire in Manali. I don't recall the exact numbers, but it was at least 50% higher. I recall a mile wide river bridge crossing between Lucknow and Gorakpur where the clouds broke and the monsoon started. That cooling rain was welcomed by all!
