Great posts, Dzi and Dilliwala. Indian Govt is acting spinelessly and they have been doing that for some time now. It is disheartening to see our foreign policy being dictated by the Chinese. Corruption is so high that they will continue to get into India. As one of the earlier posters stated, if we can't even get the Arunachal issue resolved, then what is the point of all this appeasing ?

And it won't cost a lot either.

A few years ago some lawyer somewhere in the land had affidavits made in the names of A.P.J Abdul Kalam and the P.M. (don't recall which one), just to prove how easily it cud be done. No bribes, just the regular charges.

No. No other country in the area gives refuge to Tibetans. Their usual escape route is through the border of Nepal. Many trek for months in those harsh conditions, lose family members on the way, cross into Nepal and then cross into India and only then they are safe.

I was watching a documentary on one such escape and it made even a hardened cynic like me to moisten a little.

Protests in Tibet

Fires have broken out in the Tibetan city of Lhasa amid reports of rioting, as rare street protests led by Buddhist monks appeared to gather pace.
One eyewitness told the BBC how large groups of people were setting fire to cars and shops and destroying anything of Chinese influence.

The US embassy in Beijing said US citizens had reported hearing gunfire.

Read it all....

New York Times Story

the world screams in horror for the atrocities of Burma, Sudan, and Rwanda, but where are the tears for Tibet?

here are the faces of protest .

are the protests any different from Burma, monks marching in protest? monasteries sealed off just like in Burma.

of course the chinese government blames the Dalai Lama for all this.

Don't count on it, unless it's quieter as a result of severely repressive measures - like killing and imprisoning the protesters -- which I don't wish for. I think the situation's only going to get worse as the Olympics get closer.

China wants the world to turn it eyes in their direction and admire them for all the Olympic hoo-ha. Heh - they may get something a little different than they bargained for, as Tibetans, Uigers, Falun Gong practitioners, and pro-democracy activists take this as an opportunity to show what China's REALLY all about. All the repressive security measures in the world can't keep these protesters at bay, and the more China tries the worse it looks. The PRC's tactics simply prove what the protestors are saying about China's repressive policies.

The April 2008 Vanity Fair magazine has an article by William Langewiesche on China's delusion about the Olympics. It's actually pretty funny. You can read it here:

i know it wouldn't make an iota of difference to the chinese government but what if every single person/athlete/hanger-on decided to stay away from the beijing olympics as a mark of protest?

I've been writing for over a year about boycotting the Olympics. However, as for the athletes themselves, they train for years and years and at least in America, spend thousands of dollars for their training, not to mention the money that their trainers also spend. critics of boycotting the Olympics say a boycott would do nothing to hurt China, it would only hurt the athletes.

as one of my readers wrote:

"Remember in 1979 when in protest of Soviet tanks rolling into Afghanistan, Carter decided to boycot the 1980 Moscow Olympics? At the time, he also had the support of about 60 other countries, including Great Britain, France, Italy and Sweden. It was the athletes who were hurt in that deal. I felt bad for them because they train incredibly hard for years to get to that point, not to mention all the money they spend on trainers and traveling for the competitions. I'd hate to use the Olympics again as a way to punish a country for political reasons. It does little to change things (it didn't stop Russia from continuing their fight in Afghanistan) and I don't think it will change anything in China, in regard to their hold over Tibet.

I think if you want to protest China, we have to do it in regard to trade, and since they have the upper hand (they practically own us), it will be difficult. They will just laugh at the thought of a boycott...I can't see any other country supporting this and without numbers, it won't make a difference, only to the American athletes who get left out. Russia found out the hard way, they boycotted the Olympics in L.A. and no one else followed them...they ended up being the losers, it really hurt their athletes, too.

The one thing that I would do regarding the Olympics, though...boycott the stations that are showing the events. If no one watches, they lose the money, and there's nothing like sticking it to corporate media."

I am not watching any part of the Olympics.
