Spineless.
Makes me think of the election outcome in Nepal : can´t bode well for the Tibetan refugees.Another disturbing fact came out in the largest Swedish daily , who wrote recently from Dharamsala : not a single Tibetan has made it across since March 10th.

Differing leftist perspectives : don´t miss the epic battle between Wang Xiliong and Tibetan historian Tsering Shakya. Old , still hot.

A friend of mine who has family in Lhasa said that she was able to make phone contact with them and they said the local prisons are so full they are removing prisoners to China. Her relatives also said the word is that the prisoners aren't being given adequate food and water and are being slowly starved. I don't know know accurate this is or whether it's just alarmist speculation, but it seems plausible from what I've heard from some of my clients about prison conditions in Tibet, even during times when the authorities are not particularly cracking down, as they are now.

Bit more info on the Delhi situation:

Quote:
Some 15,000 police and commandos have secured the heart of the city along the truncated route of the torch relay.
...
Earlier, Tibetan exile groups organised an alternative torch relay involving Indian politicians and celebrities.
Also:

Quote:
Police have also ordered workers in the many government offices overlooking the route not to look out of their windows to look at the ceremony because of the perceived security threat.

I will see the Dalai Lama this weekend...this is a statement from my teacher, Gelek Rimpoche, who is sponsoring his visit to Ann Arbor, Michigan -

"I am aware that a group of Chinese Students have applied for permission from the University to stage a demonstration during this weekend's teaching at Crisler Arena. We support all non-violent expression of free speech and expect anyone attending the teaching to respect that right of expression without confrontation. We do not anticipate these demonstrations to interfere with any of our programs."

I must remember to breathe peace-be peace

What if you gave a party and nobody came?

The Chinese will simply not ever get the real significance of the negative reaction to their torch relay propaganda.

This quote from the BBC article above is so illuminating:

"The Chinese government has meanwhile appealed for understanding over the actions of the torch's controversial security guards, who have been criticised for being heavy-handed with protesters.

'Relevant countries should have a clear understanding of the rules of the escorts and understand their work," foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said.

They have used their bodies to protect the torch, so their acts should be praised and the violent acts of those Tibet independence elements be condemned.'"

Oh, should we condemn Majora Carter, one of the torch-bearers in San Francisco, whose "violent act" was to pull a small Tibetan flag out of her sleeve? That got her man-handled by the "praiseworthy" torch guards and shoved unceremoniously off the street into the crowd by the SF cops.

Shut up, China. Just shut the f**k up. You are a disaster and no amount of spinning and failed PR can hide the truth. William Langewiesche has got your number:
