"America's military aid to Tibet was much more substantial than generally realized, with airdrops of supplies into the interior and the maintenance of 2,000 guerrillas in Mustang, Nepal, throughout the '60s."
And the airdrops were originating from secret RAW/ARC (intelligence) bases in India! USAF planes wud come by and refuel a few times a week.
Yep, despite being in "different camps" so to speak and all the cold-war rhetoric, it's staggering re the level of cooperation between India and USA in the 60s/70s. So much so that I heard from a relative who used to be in the IAF those days, that despite the US Navy steaming up the Bay of Bengal during the Bangladesh war, they wud not have attacked, "just high power games being played".

And now Tibet has been abandoned by India, USA and Nepal.
'Orphans' is right.

And let's not forget Britain, which dropped Tibet like a hot potato in the face of China's takeover, even though Britain had "cultivated" Tibet for decades and actually had a Political Officer assigned to Tibet and Sikkim.

Personally I wud like to forget Britain's long tradition of forgetting.
Nuff said. Needs a whole new website.

Unhappy Very Sad Affair...

I have been teaching about the current events in Tibet in my class this week. Very interesting conversations have emerged from high school students in the Bronx, half a world away!

Certainly not - and neither would the folks in Sikkim!

And typically whitewashed.

Yes, all part of the Great Game ... which continued to be played down to and including Partition.

Uh oh! Veering off topic ...

Back to Tibet.

This is probably a sign of approaching old age , but I find myself increasingly going in to a "letter to the editor"-mode. I was sitting on the bus an hour ago , groaning at the news of the Dalai Lama threatening to resign as head of the exile government - HELLO ! he stepped down from that position a long time ago , they have a fully elected government today.

Some weeks ago the newspapers here had a story (from AFP , so probably published in a lot of other countries) on how the Burmese generals was in the process of designing a law that would make it impossible for Aung San Su Kyii to be eligible , because of her marriage with a foreigner. I had some real problems in self control over that , in refraining to point out that the guy hardly could be a constitutional issue even Absurdistan , sorry Myanmar : the guy passed away nine years ago.

To no avail? Please see my post #164. Far from a situation of no avail, Chushi Gangdruk was highly successful in conducting ambushes and raids into occupied Tibet from their base in Mustang. China never had a moment's peace in that area upto '72, when Nixon pulled the CIA out. If it had been to no avail, wud the Chinese govt have thereafter pressurised the Nepal govt to shut the base down?

I'm not sure I follow - when did we confront the Chinese, foolishly or wisely?

How do you confront a government that rules by savage terror and lies from dawn to dusk? If the Tibetans want to go down fighting rather than be third-class citizens in their own home, that's their right. All we can do is show their murderers that they will never be admitted to the ranks of global humankind until they smarten up. Send our athletes to the Games, yes - but Jeezus X almighty don't nobody else go and spend their tourist bucks for those buggers!

So let me understand - they come a-invadin', having lied that their troops were only in Aksai Chin to enjoy the nice, sunny weather for a few days and wud leave thereafter (45 years later they're still enjoying the weather - albeit a bit cold at times), we don't like it and try to stop them, and this you call a foolish confrontation? In other words, we shud just let anyone who wants to walk in, becos it wud be foolish not to? Hmmm.
Nope, I still don't follow, ed.

BTW, when wud a confrontation be non-foolish - if Bhutan invades? Perhaps Maldives.
